Assuming that one decides to specialize, does anyone know if dental school loans are require repayment after DDS/DMD degree is granted, or if those loans are deferred until after residency? How would someone pay off a large loan during a residency program? if the former is the case?

They are typically deferred under the same logic that undergraduate loans are deferred while one is in dental school.

OR, if that route doesn't work, they may be deferred if hardship is demonstrated (most medical residents go this route).

There's a recent thread about this, try searching for it and see if you can turn it up.
