Perhaps age brings humility? Your estimate of dental students with a poor attitude is accurate within my classmates.

Most pre-doctoral students (this is the proper term for a medical or dental student, not a "grad student" which one hears ad nauseum) are millenials, which is explained here - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Millenials -.

To generalize these people, they have an unwarranted sense of ability & accomplishment, as well as "the Earth revolves around me" position.

It is hard, but hang in there and hold your tongue.

Sadly, fitting in as smoothly as possible seems to be the best plan.

When in Rome, do as the Romans do. This means be pouty, pissed off over trivial things, and emulate their cynical jokes. Otherwise, you will inadvertently intimidate them with your positive attitude, genuine drive to provide care for patients, etc.

Very well put. Your description is incredibly accurate, we're not classmates are we? Haha. But honestly, and at the expense of fitting in, I don't think I can pretend to be like them. Already me and a small group of decent, well mannered classmates have become outcasts in our class.

Your description is accurate for a lot of people. It took some getting used to in the beginning and many have matured over the years. If you are a down to earth person, not much you can do but find a few like minded individuals and rely on each other to get through it.

I guess it realy depends on what school you go to then. If you go to a stuck up Ivy League school or supposed big name school, expect to deal with d bags. If you go to a state school, you are more likely to have more laid back individuals. You should have applied to a good ol' by school like we have here in Texas. Man, if you could only read you would see I wasn't bashing you. I was calling you out that you were making a comment based on 2nd hand info and no actually experience. Wrong person? I never called you a d-bag. I hate people starting invalid myths about certain schools, particularly the unnecessary hate that ivies get on here. You can't claim ivies and other schools are saturated with d-bags when, going to a school in texas, you likely know little to no students in their classes.

Actually, I pick and chose when I want to be helpful and when I chose to slam comments I believe to be incorrect, idiotic or somethign I just don't agree with here. If I upset people here, I don't have to worry about the repercussions as I would in real life. So, no, your analysis is incorrect. I just chose to be a certain way online.

As far as me and Ivy league schools, I chose not to apply because I don't want to specialize. Because of that, you can get a great education at much cheaper institutions like state schools. I saw no benefit of attending an Ivy league school over any school in Texas. I am very happy with my decision. Could I have gotten in? Yes, I surely had the stats to get in, but stats aren't everything. Would I have gotten in? I have no clue because I didn't care and didn't apply. Many people have great stats and don't get in. I have no penis envy over Ivy Leaguers. If you know anything about Texas, everything is bigger in Texas. So, why would I have penis envy? My opinions are based on the self-inflated egos and over inflated self-importance many (not the majority) of ivy leaguers I have met have projected. Because of those individuals, I choose to not give the benefit of the doubt to those who attend those schools unless they have proven themselves otherwise.

...Based off of your previous posts in other threads..it appears to me as though you fall into the D BAG category..you sure do know a lot about "them" .. and it's because you're one of them... And even that, my friend, appears as though it is an understatement. Is it just me or does anyone out there feel like at least 80% of your class are arrogant, self serving, self centered, or just straight up d bags? It makes me sick to my stomach. The way they carry themselves, like they are better than the average person. It's strange because the great majority of dentists I know are humble and down to earth. Sigh... Such a shame...

Before you crucify me for this post, know that this is not just my opinion but that of the remaining 20% of the class. It's just one of those things that we know exists but no one explicitly talks about..

One point I think you are missing here about your classmates is this: Who gives a **** about anyone else at your school except YOU? You can pick and choose with who and how you spend your time. You should care little for people who carry themself like what you're saying---big deal, just don't invite them to parties and make fun of them behind their back if about how pompous and un-attractive they are. There will always be a few people like that, but more like the majority are normal down-to-earth people you can hang with and make fun of said Douche Bags. That's what I do. But usually I just don't care enough to get all riled up about it.

hey dude. I apologize for the rude comments, but seriously, we're all going to be/are professionals, so I'd encourage us all (regardless of our age or how long we've been a member at this site) to act like one.

As far as everything else goes - I think it is very rude to read someone's post and then see what their account says whether they are pre-dent, dentist, or a resident, and how many times they have posted to see how important their words are. Why do I say this? Well, because, I could make an account that says I am a resident...or better yet, change this account to say that...should that make my words more valuable? HELL no.

My experience :

When I started D-School, some of them looked like D-bags, self-centered people. But I felt it was because we did not know eachother. We organised some great activities (hockey nights, skiing, etc.) where most of us had the possibility to exchange. It made a great difference on how we perceived some other classmates.

Out of 84 people. I'd say about 50 of us participate a lot and are very open minded and not self-centered. I think it's very good considering we all have different background. I don't see anyone being a true-gunner not helping other people acheive very well.

I'm very happy about it. I'll never forget those good times in dental school.

Yes, its true for the most part. Many of the dental classmates are self-centered and have little humility. I've seen people talk about patients in the MOST degrading of terms. As if they know all about everything. God forbid being well-educated would make you more respectful.
