Hi everyone - I am starting at OSU in the fall and was curious to current students there as to what the daily class schedules are like? I am specifically concerned about my dogs and wondering if there are typically any breaks from classes during the day where I could go home and let my dogs out.

Thanks for the help!

General schedule is class 8 am-noon, 1pm-3pm. It varies a little day-to-day, but we typically get an hour for lunch. We start at 8 am almost every day (for the first 2 quarters - next quarter we start at 9, yay!). We are generally in class until 3 or so every day - some days earlier, some longer. They split us up into lab groups for Histology, so there are occasional days when you won't have lab and will either get out earlier or have a 2 to 3 hour break in the morning.

PS- Congrats! It's a lot of work, but it will be worth it! Know now that first year sucks - but everyone says it gets better!

That sounds about like UT's schedule, though we are on semesters, not quarters. I am curious, how does the quarter system work? Is it like block scheduling in that you complete more classes per year in smaller chunks, if you know what I mean?

Thank you!!!

That is what I've heard about the first year, but you're right, I know it will be worth it - it's such a dream come true!

I'm hoping that I can find a place close enough to campus so that I can go home, let the dogs out, and come back within an hour. I was thinking that was probably how the break was - thanks again!

First semester, I was able to run home to let the puppy out during the lunch hour (which was often longer than an hour, depending on when various labs let out). Once the pup was old enough by winter break, he was fine staying at home until 3 PM. You should be okay.

Thanks! I figured if I couldn't always get home to let them out they would be ok; I work full-time and lived alone for about a year, and the majority of the time, I couldn't get home to let them out at lunch. But, for the past year, they have been staying with my brother, who works from home, during the day so they have gotten used to being able to go out whenever they want. I am just a little concerned about transitioning back into them being home alone during the day. I'm sure it will be ok; but they're my babies, so I'm bound to worry, ya know? 😀

I totally understand this. I'm a little worried about my little girl as well. I mean, I go to school until 5 most days now and I work two jobs so I'm not home a lot, but I live with my parents and she gets let out a lot. I'm looking at renting a house with some other vet student and there is a backyard, but she's a tiny girl and can get out of small holes really easily so I don't really like the idea of leaving her in the yard all day either. 😕
I think I'll figure it out when I get there though.

My neighbor has a chihuahua who can fit through the holes in our wood fencing, so she put chicken wire that's about two/three feet tall all the way around her backyard. I'm sure the dog could climb over if she really wanted to, but it's never been a problem yet. (...probably hasn't thought of it yet, she's not the smartest thing.)

That working would depend on what sort of fence you have, though, and how much she wants to get out.

(I'd also say that if you did that, it might be smart to use some sort of rubber coated chicken wire since the stuff my neighbor has up is very sharp on the edges where it was cut.)

So I can keep my great dane in a space by putting a card board box in front of her😀 ( Okay we are going to walk around the leaf)

My friend however has an industrious dalmation who loved to dig and go visiting. She fixed the problem by stapling a section of wire fencing to her wood fence and then digging a trench for the rest of the wire to go down about two feet and covering it up. They haven't been able to dig out since the addition.

I haven't met a papillion that liked to get dirty though...I've only known two and they both hated dew on the grass and walking on dirt patches.

Thanks for the suggestions. She certainly doesn't mind getting dirty, but she's not a digger. It's just...holes that happen to already BE in the fence, or which are created by other dogs. If she can fit her head through the hole (which means it's only 4 inches across), she can get out.

And, yeah, she is way prissy. She just came in from outside though and is COVERED in dirt from rolling around on top of a stick four times her size.
