My wife and I live in Houston now but we lived in Dallas for 14 years prior to that and are heading back there for residency. Oaklawn is a very diverse area and not for everybody. My wife and I personally loved it. Lots of great little shops.
As for Love Field being a noise problem, don't worry about that. You are far enough away that it will not bother you too bad.
PM us if you have any specific questions.

I know some people who work at utsw and live in the village,it's about 5-10 minutes away from the best places to hang. but 20 minutes from utsw, and depending on which community you live in either dirt cheap or fairly expensive, the westside and northbridge are the more expensive, but some are in the middle.
Closer to utsw, try the cityville apartments.they're new and very nice.
what's your budget?
