I am a senior in high school and I want to start preparing early for the DAT exam. I was wondering from people who have scored high on the DAT if they have any tips for me. What books or programs should I buy to best prepare myself for the exam? Are the critical reading and the math sections on the DAT more, less, or the same difficulty as the ones on the SAT? Lastly, what should I be doing now to prepare for the exam? Thank you for you time.

You should probably not be worrying about the DAT right now...focus on making the change to living by yourself in college and keeping your GPA as high as possible for now.

even though you shouldn't be worrying about it now, I will give you the scoop on whats good on the DAT market. Kaplan Book (Good for the basics and getting you back into studying), Kaplan Course Online (great subject tests and lots of practice), DAT Destroyer (awesome for tons of practice problems), DAT Achiever (3 full length exams, REAL GOOD), Top Score (3 full length exams ALSO GREAT), Schaums AP Bio (good resource), Cambells BIO. Thats plenty of stuff. I used Schaums, Kaplan, Top Score, Acheiver, and Destroyer and feel I got plenty of practice.

Like the poster said above, focus on your GPA in college first. High school chem probably won't cover all that you need to know for the DAT, and you probably haven't learned organic chem yet either. By taking those classes - intro bios, gen chem, orgo - you'll be studying for the DAT! 🙂 Nice, huh?

The only thing you might try doing now is preparing for the PAT (perceptual ability test). Keyhole problems, top front end, cube counting, hole punching...

You might consider taking the DAT a summer early like I am. I just finished my sophomore year in undergrad, and I'm studying for the DAT now. I'll be taking it in late August with enough time to retake the DAT if necessary... all before I ever have to apply! That way I have a good idea of what schools I have a shot at.

Anyways, good luck to you! It seems like you are really motivated already. Just keep up that ambition throughout undergrad and when you actually start to study for the DAT. 😀
