Hey team,

I am currently in my sophmore year in College and was wondering if I should study for the DAT this summer of my sophmore year and take it .. but the thing is I am not going to be taking Ochem and Introduction to Evolution and Diversity (biology) until Junior year. .[btw havent taken physics yet will that be on the DAT?] Should I wait until I complete Ochem and biology? or should I just study for it in summer of sophmore year, and study again during winter break then take it after just doing 1 sems of ochem?

What do you guys think? I know taking it summer of Junior year will mean I have to wait until summer of senior year to apply which.. Does that mean I am setting myself back a year? What do you guys think I should do? Any advice is appreciated .

Can I apply to dental school summer of Junior year, and take DAT end of summer and send them my scores then? [so apply then take dat and send scores] does that work?

well... Im sure it has been done before successfully (DAT before orgo) but... ur gonna have to self learn all the reactions by urself. Do you have that kinda work ethic? The two orgo classes (1 and 2) move at a relatively high pace where about 50-60 reactions need to be "memorized" cold (well there are tricks where if you understand whats attacking what ~ it will eliminate the need to memorize and instead, you'll be able to apply rational ~ makes it easy IMO).

Anyways... You'll have to do quite a lot of work solo to master Orgo by urself.

again, imo..... I wouldn't do it. Whats the rush?

I don't see any upside to what you are proposing?
Why are you trying to re-invent the wheel? Just take Ochem and then take the DAT.

There is no reason to rush the DAT. Take Orgo and then take DAT. If you teach yourself orgo, you will forget how to eat.

Dude, dont rush it. I took the DAT after one semester and I scored well, however I feel like I was lucky not to get a lot of reactions on my test. I had a buddy do the same thing and got a 13 because it was loaded with reactions.

I could see it if you were in my position, non-trad and looking at a gap year, but in your case, what's the point?

Thanks for the advice guys 🙂 I am going to wait and take the DAT summer of Junior year after I complete Ochem.. I am going to study for Ochem and Physics in Summer so I can be a little ahead in class.

Is it possible to apply to dental school before taking the DAT?
DAT has to come first right?
-Sorry Guys I am a noob..

DAT must come first. It sounds like you may want to sit down with your school's pre-professional advisor so that you know what is expected/required for you to attend dental school.

If you want a head start on o-chem you could check this site out:

You can take classes from universities across the nation for free. They're usually online versions of the class (like o-chem) as it was taught five or six years ago.

DAT does not HAVE to come first. You can take a risk and apply to your schools, and take DAT's a few weeks after. The risk involved is that you may or may not do well according to your preparations. I applied to schools ASAP and I took the DAT 3 weeks later and did okay. I got into dental school.

I definitely DO NOT recommend it. Its possible, but not the best idea. I did that two years ago. I taught myself orgo while I was taking an accelerated physics course over the summer... I only got a 15. The problem with rushing orgo is that it's totally doable, but life can get in the way.

I wrote the DAT without taking any of the OCHEM courses and having any background. Studied 2 months for all the sections. scored 26 on the ochem. definately possible. Ill recommend getting dat destroyet anfd also exam crackers for mcat
and one thing I realized for OCHEM you do not need to actually understand all the rxs just know the basic rules and memorize all the rest. gluck to you
