Hey you guys, who have taken the DAT, could you please tell me if anyone has used the Biology text book by Campbell and Reece as your study guide? I was planning to read the topics like ecology and evolution from this. But its classification chapters are too much in detail. So any of you guys who has read it and found it really helpful in the real dat. Acutally i was planning to buy the EK for Bio, but i didnt want to confuse myself with new stuff at the last moment as i have my DAT next month. Any advice about whether preparing from EK is worth or to be on the safer side, is textbook reading ok. I have the Kaplan BB and the Barrons. Unfortunately my Topscore has expired just a few days ago. Any advice/suggestions on my situation, please.............

Good Lord save yourself the time and don't study from Barrons for anything but the PAT. Their biology section is full of errors and erroneous information. I just bought a Schaums outline for biology...gotta get readin...good luck!

All I used was the Kaplan book and my old Campbell text. I found that the Kaplan book was good enough for most stuff. I used Campbell once in a while to either go more in depth with the Kaplan stuff, or when reviewing answers to problems I missed on the practice tests.

I used campbell and Reece for review of mitosis, etc and also the genetics section. For all of the systems of the body you need a physiology textbook. I used Vander, Sherman & Luciano's Human Phys and I found it to be right on.

From what I remember the Kaplan book was good for taxonomy, instead of reading 5 chapters in Campbell it nicely condenses everything into a nice chapter. Ecology as well, Kaplan gives a general idea. I had many ecology questions on my test maybe 8-10, i know i had to educated guesses on at least 5 of them. I got a 24 on the biology section of the real DAT. If you are a month or less away from your test, I would forget about reading text books, and get some study guides and read them. Having a general scope on a section is more helpful than trying to retain tidbits which you will forget anyways on the real exam.

My 2 cents,

it took me three days to read the entire unit on evolution from cambel and reece. after reading, i absorbed as much information as i could, and then turned to shaum's, and finished the chapter on evolution in a day. that same day, i read the kaplan bb on evolution. it took time, but i don't think i'll need to revisit that subject again, maybe practice some problems here and there, like hwe.

as for classification, cambell and reece note on the first chapter of that unit, that the next unit of chapters fast-fowards life in a two week reading session, or something like that. i'm debating as to whether i should read that unit too.

besides that, there is only ecology and plant biology that i'll need to brush up on. again, i'm not sure if it's worth the read. i plan on taking the dat early august, i think it's all about timing.

the only difference is, is the fact that you are taking your dat next month, so i would avoid any lengthy reading. instead, i would just practice problems, and go over concepts you know, to brush up.
