This is a very confusing question

I picked D but answer is B

How is the Top object an oval rather than a rectangle?

I actually get it why it's B, since the 'square' inside the figure has to be a' dotted' figure rather than a 'solid line' figure. So I get my mistake there, using that logic B is the only possible answer.

But How would one figure out the Oval vs rectangle part of my question?

My guess is there that it's just to trip you up and keep you from looking at the important detail like that square that is inside the figure.

The oval and rectangle would both produce those outlines in the Front and End views, but what they are really testing is the solid/dashed line overlap of the 2 figures!
