DAT deadline for post-Dec consideration

Hi all,

Does anyone have information on schools' latest dates for taking DAT re-take scores for post-Dec consideration? I'm not sure if there is a deadline... but say, if the person re-take the DAT in Dec 2011, would this affect chances of getting post-Dec interviews?

P.S. I do not have the ADEA handbook and this is the only question I have so I'm not sure if I should buy one now. If someone can help me with this that woudl be great. 🙂

each school is different. most schools offer this info on their site, but as far as i remember its too late at this point. Most schools will not consider DAT scores that are taken in November. Again check with the website of the individual school or call them up, but I remember November as being a general cutoff date.

I was just at USC this week and they said that they review ALL applications received before Feb 1 and purposely don't fill their class until april/may to leave room for qualified applicants that apply later in the cycle. that might be a good place to start 🙂

I am retaking the DAT in december and I have emailed all my schools to let them know if this was ok and most said yes they would accept the new scores as long as they were in before their deadline. They also said that this didnt guarantee anything but yes they do accept the new scores.

Every school has different policies. Your best advice is to directly call or email specific schools as you may be afforded relevant advice in a more candid setting than would otherwise be presented on a school's general website.

In general, you should be able to submit DAT test scores up until the deadline date for general applications. However, as others have hinted, in practice a dental school may not take additional scores into consideration beyond a certain date. Either way, you should notify every school of any pending scores as you do not want a decision to be made preemptively.

Would retaking the DAT affect your chances? Well - that of course depends on what your DAT score is now and what your future DAT score ends up being. Ask yourself if you think you can seriously boost your scores without risking a severe drop in any one section.

An upward trend in DAT scores is favorable. And certainly a new DAT score with high marks would never hurt your chances. But as to whether it would be the defining measure, making or breaking you, is tied into too many other factors.

Assess your current situation. Assess your strengths and weaknesses. Then after communicating with dental schools that interest you decide if A. you are retaking to give yourself ANY chance (i.e. your current score is not sufficient by the school's documented statistics) or B. you are retaking the exam to INCREASE your chance.
