I'm applying for the 2009 cycle, i'm in the process right now. By when do i NEED to take the DAT's? Really important, i was planning on Sept. is that too late?

September would be the absolute latest that one would want to take it (ideally). You'll be fine unless you have other areas of your application that could use some work. In that case every bit helps, including completing your application as early as you can.
