Just received my copy of the DAT destroyer. I noticed it said that it shouldn't be completed timed per se although DAT bootcamp suggests timing your questions as your proceed further along the booklet. I'm writing the canadian DAT so I only need the biology and general chem sections.

Any tips would be helpful to make it the most time efficient and effective studying.

As the sole author of the DAT Destroyer, I am best qualified to answer your question. Do ALL the work untimed. You will have all the time you need on the DAT if you know the material, all the time in the world will not help if you go in unprepared.

Do the work timed - I did, and it was very important. Being able to work quickly is a critical skill for the DAT. The scores will speak for themselves. Content review should never be timed, but practice questions absolutely should. Do ALL practice questions timed.

Anyways OP, I think you should do the questions untimed as @orgoman22 suggested, and really focus on the solutions. I don't know if the cDAT has a math portion, but if it does, then I think you should do the Math Destroyer timed to build your speed. Otherwise, do the sciences untimed. Best of luck 🙂

Do it all twice. Know every answer, and why all the "other" options are incorrect. If theres a definition you don't know in one option on one small question, know it. Review every question you missed/guessed on after the first time through, then do it again.

doing destroyer "timed" does not make sense. You are trying to learn the vast amount of material it wants to teach. If it's a full length exam, yes it makes sense to do an entire section within alloted time figuring out whether you have just enough time, too much time or too little time, but how are you going to mix up easy/freebie questions and medium difficulty, and high diffuclty level questions appropriately just like the real exam?

First time you go through should be your learning phase.

When you go over it second time, you really want to make sure you don't get same questions wrong you did the first time and really know "why" you got certain questions right or wrong.

Your third round should be going over questions you got wrong on round 1, then questions you got wrong twice in a row. (double star these problems so you will recognize)

at least this is how i did it

The way you study should really be based on your own study habits and type.

The first material should be for your review and the questions be solved untimed. I strongly advise against using the Destroyer as the first material to study. It's unorganized and the questions are all over the place. Only after you review and solidify the basics should you move on to the Destroyer.

For example, I did Chad questions and Sterling questions untimed. Then I used the Destroyer, giving myself ~50 seconds to do a question. DAT Bootcamp should be timed.

Untimed
Because of the way the questions are designed. A lot of the answers for the questions are "all of the above." There's a reason for that....

Hey @EastCoastDentist!
Sorry about the rushed response this morning, just busy with other things... not everyone's life revolves around a computer screen.
I'm actually glad that you asked for help before taking the DAT. Have you thought of contacting Nancy Steen, the co-owner of DAT Destroyer? She is very helpful with DAT tips, has tons of experience, and is always looking out for the best interest of the students. In fact, Dr. Romano and Ms. Steen have experience working with students in the classroom and online, which is a BIG plus.
Also, content review is important, so you might want to check out the Destroyer Study Group on facebook. 🙂 You have nothing to lose!!!
Anyway, I'm over here getting ready for Halloween, my favorite holiday!!! 🙂 Hope to see you around on the Facebook DAT Destroyer Study Group. You'll love it, I promise!

Yoooo UNTIMED AF. You’re gonna look at some of those problems and be like wtf is going on... then you’ll skip most of them and have to go back to review. Use Bootcamp to time yourself. You’ll see that most of your learning will come from the destroyer problems so go through everything untimed.
