Could someone please help me with #24 in the Organic Chemistry section of the DAT Destroyer?

Prior to tackling DAT Destroyer problems, I watched and studied Chad's Videos. I understand the substitution of benzene's H with a methyl group. However, I do not understand the second reaction. Chromic acid is a strong oxidizing agent, yes. However, I thought that you need an alcohol group to do oxidation into an aldehyde then carboxylic acid? But toluene has no oxygens. 🙁

What exactly does K2Cr2O7 do then? Am I forgetting something?

Thank you so much (in advanced)! 🙂

If you have a Benzylic carbon that can Hydrogens, K2 Cr2O7 or KMnO4 will oxidise it to Carboxy Acid.
