The azimuthal quantum number, often denoted by the letter l, determines the shape of an atomic orbital and is also known as the orbital angular momentum quantum number.
Different values of l correspond to different types of orbitals:
l = 0 corresponds to an s orbital (spherical shape).
l = 1 corresponds to a p orbital (dumbbell shape).
l = 2 corresponds to a d orbital (more complex shapes).
l = 3 corresponds to an f orbital.
