The 5 Biggest Mistakes DAT & OAT Students Make Every Year | Dr. Jim Romano
Over the years, I've worked with thousands of DAT and OAT students, and I've noticed the same mistakes appear again and again. Avoiding these common pitfalls can make a significant difference in your preparation and your score.

1. Taking the DAT before you're fully prepared.
Don't let friends, advisors, or anyone else pressure you into taking the exam before you know you're ready. A few extra weeks of preparation can make the difference between one successful attempt and an unnecessary retake.

2. Relying too heavily on practice test scores.
Practice tests are valuable, but they are only estimates. Many students score higher or lower on the actual DAT. Use practice tests to identify strengths and weaknesses—not as the final measure of how you'll perform on exam day.

3. Memorizing instead of understanding concepts.
The DAT is designed to test your ability to apply knowledge. Focus on understanding why an answer is correct rather than simply memorizing facts.

4. Ignoring your weakest subject.
It's tempting to spend more time on the subjects you enjoy, but the greatest score improvements often come from strengthening your weakest areas.

5. Focusing on scores instead of learning from your mistakes.
Every missed question is an opportunity to improve. Spend more time understanding why you missed a problem than counting how many you answered correctly.

What mistake do you think students make most often? Is there another one you would add to this list?
