Hey SDN Community. Just took the DAT. Here are my scores:

TS - 21
AA - 23

Not the greatest scores like some of you 25 AA-er's, but this will do for me. I'm too scared to retake to improve biology.

I don't post very often but thought I should contribute because of the other generous souls who have provided useful information here on SDN. Even though it's probably been beat like a dead horse, I'd recommend the following study materials in order of importance:

1. Chad's Videos
2. CrackDAT/CrackMath
3. DAT Destroyer
4. Cliff's AP Bio
5. Kaplan course

About Chad's Videos:
He's the man. Best $30 I ever spent. Watch his videos. He'll teach you all that mumbo jumbo that your college professor couldn't.

CrackDAT/CrackMath:
You need it.

DAT Destroyer 2010:
It's good for learning lots of reactions, but I found that the book was always a lot of plug-and-chug sort of answers in which you would be able to figure out most questions within ~20-30 seconds. I don't think that it gives enough preparation for conceptual questions, which was the majority of my DAT.

Cliff's AP Bio:
Similar to Chad's, but in a geared towards biology. They make it really easy for you to understand. Unfortunately, the biology section on the DAT is extremely random, with only ~10/40 questions I was completely positive about. The other 30 really tested my test-taking abilities/luck. I was able to determine 2-3/5 possible answer choices as incorrect, leaving me with a 1/2 or 1/3 chance of getting the question correct. Obviously, I'm not the best person to consult on this matter because my score wasn't that great.

Kaplan:
Yes, it's expensive. Yes, it's not the best bang for your buck. I went over destroyer multiple times and then attacked Kaplan's practice quizzes and was getting in the realm of ~22/30 for Gchem and Ochem. It'll test your knowledge in a different manner, and there is no simple solution/book/program that will fully prepare for what will be one of the most stressful times of your life. It's not worth the ~$1300, but you also have to remember that $1300 is chump change when compared to the cost of dental school. I wouldn't necessarily promote it or advise against it -- feel free to ask me any questions you feel I haven't addressed.

I'd be more than happy to address any questions you SDNer's have. Take it easy!

Did you use topscore, achiever, datqvault?

How does the kaplan qbank/practice tests compare to the real thing?

What practice tests prepared you for the reading section?

PS. Congratulations on such amazing scores =)

TopScore - Probably the most realistic in terms of practice score vs real DAT score, but I feel as if there are not enough conceptual questions. I scored lower on TopScore than the real thing though.
Achiever - It was way too hard, especially the RC. I pretty much used it for the sciences, which I thought were helpful. Not too sure I'd recommend it though. I don't think I scored higher than 19 or 20 on each of the sciences.
Datqvault - It's a good tool for practicing problems, but it didn't help me for my particular test. For $20, I would say go for it. My benchmark scores were all over the place, ranging from 18-28, with an average of about ~20.

At the end of the day, they are all practice tests. You don't have the same kind of adrenaline compared to the real test day. Just make sure not to go too crazy!

Bio - Too easy. Kaplan uses a lot of "if you know the definition, you know the answer" type questions. The DAT tests your knowledge about application of multiple concepts in one question.

GChem + OChem - Great resource. It makes you think differently, especially compared to Destroyer. But then comes the debate about cost vs benefit. Is that my business education coming in to play? Haha.

Kaplan Math - 10x harder. Honestly, I didn't even really use it. The probability questions were crazy hard, for me at least.

I never did a practice RC test, besides those provided in topscore/achiever/kaplan. I wouldn't say I'm the best at comprehension, either. I didn't make a roadmap. There were a good chunk of tone questions, with the each of the answers consisting of a single word. The tricky part about this was that they use uncommon/obscure words to describe "how the author felt" which tests tests your comprehension along with your vocabulary.

Thanks. Best of luck to you! 🙂

Great scores. The difference between you and a 25 AA is like 1 or 2 questions so consider this a victory. Congrats all the hard work paid off 🙂

Very solid performance. Takes away any academic doubts Dental schools might have! Very well done!

Since we're pretty close could I ask which schools you're wanting to apply to? I am in North Bay 🙂

No idea...I need to look into what schools accept JC courses. What about yourself?!

Great scores. Awesome job. Congratulations.

Definitely UCSF, UOP and UCLA...going to find a few more out of states (maybe UMB and Detroit Mercy) but man this is more difficult than studying for the DAT >_>.

Dude, I think you do not need to worry about a retake. You did well.

Thanks for all your support! I studied for about ~2 months or so.

Any advice on dental schools that aren't too particular about those taking prereq's at JC's?!

I hear UMDNJ and NYU are nit too particular. Also check out Arizona, Nevada and Texas schools. They have less traffic and are less expensive.

Hey. I'm in the midst of studying for the DATs. Anyone heard of the online Crack the Dat programs? If so are they worth the$$? I Appreciate your help.

I used Crack DAT. I really liked using it for the PAT portion because it gives you a bunch of practice problems. I've heard it's good for RC as well but I never used it for RC myself.
