Just finished taking the bad boy and don't know how to feel about it...
PA 19 (73.7) 🙁
QR 23 (97.1)
RC 17 (29.5) <--- PIANO'D 😡😡😡
BIO 22 (95.7)
GC 26 (98.4)
OC 22 (91.5)
TS 23 (98.2)
AA 22 (96.4)
Breakdown to come soon...
I have a 3.99 GPA with a lot of extracurricular activity.. Is my RC going to be a problem when it comes to getting in? I already submitted my application and am applying to Stony Brook, UB, UPenn, UPitt, Ohio State, Columbia, NYU, BU, UConn, and University of Maryland....I am also a NY resident...What do you guys think? Any advice/comments?
BIO- Random, Random, Random as everyone on this forum says! Having said this, there are certain things you can do to prepare for this and do well on this section. First and foremost, once you do all the practice tests/quizzes/questions make sure to READ ALL THE ANSWERS, and yes this includes the questions that you got right...I know everyone says this but it will help you eliminate the answers on questions that you have never seen based on this extra info that you have gathered! I had around 10 random questions (5 medium and 5 really difficult) but I was able to reason through them based on this "Extra" knowledge that I had gained. For this section use AP Cliff's Biology and do the 2 practice tests at the end of the book...I used KBB as well to get a basic idea but know that this is not nearly enough information to be fully prepared for this section of the DAT...Also, my test had a lot of questions on developmental bio, DNA technology, and genomics so make sure to read Ch 18-21 in the Campbells Biology 7th Edition...You obviously might not have the same version but do everything possible to be ready for the Bio section since it does tend to be very Random. With a little reasoning power, you'll be ready for anything though! One final note: Destroyer didn't help me too much on this section since it focuses on small little details but it's worth going over it just in case because you can glean a lot of information by reading the answers in the back...I went through Destroyer 3 times.
GC- 2 words: Chad's Videos...That's all you need in my opinion but I would supplement with KBB and Destroyer...I didn't think I was going to get a 26 but this section was easier than any practice test you will take! I have taken a lot of Practice Tests (Kaplan, Topscore, Achiever) and all of them are MUCH harder than the actual DAT. Also, most of the questions are conceptual and the ones that require calculations are already set up in an equation so you don't have to solve for anything. Make sure you look at the answer choices beforehand so you don't do EXTRA work and waste time solving for an actual number when all you had to do was set up the correct equation. Destroyer is much much harder than the real deal but it's great practice so make sure you understand each question that you get wrong and again, read all the answers!
OC- Chad's videos + Destroyer Roadmaps! All the reactions are pretty common...No surprises here...Know your E1/E2/SN1/SN2 and whether something is Syn or Anti...I also read KBB but Chad's videos and Destroyer Roadmaps should be more than enough...I thought this would be my highest section but guess they had some trick problems in here...
PA- Get the CDP 10 Test Version...I was scoring 22-23 on CDP but was frustrated with the certain sections that were on the real DAT....For example, in the hole punching section, the real DAT has the holes poorly drawn so it's hard to decide where they have punched the actual hole. TFE and Pattern Folding was harder than CDP, Angles and Cube Counting (no illusions) were easier, and Keyholes were on Par with CDP. Just Practice Practice Practice!
RC- I am not going to comment on this section but if you get the Piano passage, don't panic like I did! It will only hurt your score and this shows with my 17...If I had stayed calm my AA would have been 24+...Oh well just learn from my mistake and STAY CALM!
QR- I am naturally good at math so I didn't do too much to practice for this section. I went through Math Destroyer once and a lot of the questions were similar so make sure you understand how to do them by reading the explanations in the back! Also know the basic conversions (ounces, quarts, gal, etc) The calculator is pretty bad and doesn't register everything on the first time so be careful while using it. I did most of the math by hand due to this and didn't have time to finish 3 questions due to this and just guessed.
CDP- Scores ranged from 19-23
Topscore- I averaged in the low 20s for all the sections for all 3 tests...This is the best indicator of how you will do on the actual test
Kaplan Tests- I averaged around 22 for all 3 tests that I took but this is much harder than the actual test
I am pleased with my AA of 22 and TS of 23...I believe that everyone has the ability to do well on this test. STUDY SMART, NOT HARD! Also, don't waste too much time on this forum! From personal experience, it's easy to get waste a lot of time reading everyone's breakdowns but most of them tend to be similar if not the same! You can read a few to get an idea of what was asked but don't spend hours wasting valuable time which you could have invested studying for the actual DAT. I wish the best of luck to all those who will be taking this DAT in the near future and hope that you all do well! Just go in with the mindset that you'll destroy it and everything should workout if you have put in the effort! Hope this helps!
