DAT Done... 7/23 Help!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey guys, I just finished DAT right now and here are my scores. I would greatly appreciate it if you guys could give me some feedback on if these scores are good enough to get into dental school... First of all my overall gpa is 3.35 and science gpa of 3.42. I'm a California resident and I'm applying to the following schools: UoP, UNLV, Western, UCSF, UCLA, USC, Boston, Harvard, Columbia, NYU.

I will break down the DAT later when I get a chance because I'm so nervous and I would like to take a little bit of break....

Here are my scores....

PAT 19 (73.7)
QR 17 (65.7)
RC 18 (44.0)
Bio 20 (86.9)
GC 21 (87.4)
OC 17 (51.1)
TS 19 (76.6)
AA 19 (77.2)

I'm just glad that I didnt get any section below 17... I gotta say it was tough with such a limited time..... but anyways, I will break it down for you guys later.

Please give me some feedback on whether I have a chance of getting into the schools that I have applied to and if I should re-take the DAT or not...
I would greatly appreciate any input. Thanks in advance!

Good luck to those of you studying for DAT!!! I hope that you guys and I can be future colleagues!!!😍
You have average scores, and you're GPA is OK!
So, here's what I think about different schools you're applying to:
UoP>>Average PAT, relatively low RC, and a chem score of 17 will make it somewhat tough for you to get into this school. They like students with high PAT and RC scores.
UNLV>>You're consider an out of state applicant. You need to submit your application ASAP, so that you'll be considered early enough to have a shot at this school.
Western>>If it was last year, you could pretty much consider yourself accepted into this school, because it was their first year and many students didn't know about them. This year, however, almost every Cali resident will be applying to this school and that may raise their average DAT scores. But I think you still have a decent shot at this school.
UCSF>>They really like a high GPA. Your DAT is close to their average score. So you will most likely get an interview. Getting accepted really depends on how you handle that interview.
UCLA>>This is one tough school to get in. Their average DAT score is 22 and their average GPA is 3.6+. Unfortunately, considering the fact that you have quite a few 17 and 18 scores, I'd say you'll have a tough time getting into this school.
USC>>You definitely have a shot at USC.
Boston>>Not familiar with the school, but you definitely want to check their residency restrictions just to ensure they take enough out of state applicants.
Harvard>> I don't know dude. Last year their average DAT was 24.4. You're one brave soul choosing to apply to this school with a DAT score of 19.
Columbia>>Not familiar with this school.
NYU>>You definitely have a shot at this one.

Now, bear in mind that these comments are just based on my personal opinion about these schools based on my previous experience with them and the stats that you've posted. You don't necessarily have to agree with any of what I've written here. And definitely don't let me stop you from applying to any of these schools if you really think you have a shot at them.

Good Luck👍

Thanks so much for your input. I'm just glad to hear that I might have a chance to get into dental school at least. That is my primary goal after all!

I know I could've done so much better in science section though....

it was my first time taking DAT and I was so nervous and couldn't think straight.... And oh man... those clocks ticking just makes it even harder...

So here are my tips for those of you taking DAT near future.
PACE YOURSELF!!! Make sure you can get as comfortable as possible and try to wear ear plugs if possible. My testing center had so many people and it was just horrible....

Once again I really appreciate any input. Please give me some feedback. Negative or positive they are all welcome. Thanks

Best shot are UNLV, Western, NYU and USC, and probably Boston.

I'm sorry but to be honest with you, you might wanna withdraw your appl. from Harvard (sorry!)

Harvard>> I don't know dude. Last year their average DAT was 24.4.

Can you cite your source for this one?

Unless you're talking about 2006? This link has 2006-2009, and 2008, it was 20. Did it jump up that high again for 2009?
They trend of going from 24.4->22->20 AA kinda tells me they decided to go after a bit more well-rounded people, but going back to 24 would mean they got really selective again?
That's assuming the applicant pool didn't change, which can be a safe thing to say considering how many people apply each year.

http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=602216

With that being said, considering the fact that Harvard takes 35 people a year, and they have so much demand. I'm sure they're REALLY selective. Unless you've done some CRAZY extracurrical/dentistry stuff, I wouldn't get ur hopes high for Harvard. Honestly, I'm applying with a 4.1 and I don't even think I'll get in to Harvard, just thought it'd be fun if I at least get an interview lol.

I'm dropping Harvard. Like many of you have said it will be waste of money. But thanks for everyone's honest opinion.

It seems like this cycle is a lot more competitive than previous years so I'm a bit nervous.

I would like to get into my dream school which is UCSF but let's hope that luck is on my side (crossing fingers. lol 😀). But I'll take any school I can get accepted to.

Do you guys think I should retake the DAT?

hmmm...Probably not at this point!

Thanks!
these are very informative threads.
I really appreciate your help!
and good luck on your application!!!😍

Does anybody else have any other comment? I would like to get as many opinion as possible!!! 😀. hehehe. I know that everyone is busy studying or (relaxing?) but any of your previous or current experience is welcome!!

Oh, and some people were telling me about my extra curriculars and such, so I decided to put some of my extracurricular activities.

1) 4 years of research (from freshmen year) worked in 2 different lab (Plant and botany, and Cell biology and neuroscience) and published 1 abstract and 1 article in progress.

2) Dental shadowing experience in US and Panama about 180 hours in total.
Note: In panama I have done teeth cleaning, tooth extraction and etc. It was the best experience I've ever had and this experience finalized my decision to become a dentist!!!

3) I have held 2 part time jobs while going to school as full-time student. I worked about 20-30 hours/week.. (which was pretty intense) all 4 years.

4) health career peer-mentor at my university.

5) Summer dean's fellowship internship

Hope this helps for those of you curious and giving me advise on whether I have a chance to get into dental school or not.

Once again thanks for giving me your honest opinions! Cheers!

This is my personal opinion.
Very Weak Chance: Harvard, UCLA
Weak Chance: UCSF,UOP,Columbia
Good Chance: USC, NYU,Western
I am not familiar with the other schools. Four years of research is your strongest ECA. However your PAT,QR,RC amd OC scores can cause some problems. If I were you ,I add more less competitive schools to my list(again personel opinion). Add more private schools! Good luck with your application.Hopefully your dreams come through!

I have heard that UCSF is really big on undergraduate research.... since thats your top choice, having a ton of research under your belt definitely wont hurt. I actually think you might have a good chance with UCSF.

I've talked to Dr. Ancajas at UNLV and she said they prefer >19 on QR,RC,OC, and GC for out of state applicants. BUT you do have a lot of ECs and your GPA is okay so you may still have a shot at UNLV. The others schools I don't know much about so I can't help you there. I'm a NV resident and I volunteer at the clinics at UNLV SDM and I must say they have a very nice program. Sorry I can't help you with the others.

scores are not to bad...ur gpa is pretty solid. if you look at predents most average accepted students AA is around a 19 so congrats on that and your GPA is average so i would not worry i am sure you are bound to get in somewhere but congrats and enjoy the remaining summer you have

Thanks for all your supports and comments! I do hope that I will get in somewhere at least because we are all paying huge amount of money and did study hard! and most importantly, we all have strong desire and dream to be someone which is to be a DENTIST!!!

I hope that all of you guys will get accepted to your dream schools!

Cheers to all future class of 2014 and 2013 (UoP)!!!

Since you have worked in UNLV SDM, I was wondering, can you tell me about your experience with UNLV and if you have any honest positive or negative aspects you have seen in UNLV? I would greatly appreciate it!
