Alright sdn, this is my situation, took dat 2 days ago

overall gpa:3.2
science gpa:3.2

pat 16
QR 13
RC 17 ( I am really greateful for this, I am ESL and thought I would get a 12)
GC 23
OC 20
Bio 20
TS 21
AA 19

I have been studying for a long time, almost 2 years,
obviously you can tell my problems are pat and QR

If I retook the test, I don't know what I would do different, especially for pat, I went thought kaplan's pat, CDP, acethedat's pat, Barron's pat, topscore pat, acheiver pat, basically all the pats out their, my scores were low in the begining but I got better as I retook the tests over and over, of course the later scores were deceiving cuz I already saw the material, but I had no choice except to redo the same questions over, I have actually memorized all the pat practice questions just from taking so many tests over and over, thus if I retake, I would have to redo the same questions again to study which I don't think will help me much...

same story for QR, did all the resources you guys talk about here and don't talk about, I have over 3 notebooks 180 sheets just doing math problems, besided i am really afraid of retaking cuz I don't want to mess up my TS and RC, I don't think I will be able to repeat those again

so I just need some thoughts, I am a minority(not asian),

1)would it be a good idea to call each school and ask if I need to retake with these stats?? I heard schools just care about $$$ and if you ask them they will tell you to apply regardless cuz they just want your money

2) if i have to retake, what would I do different for pat, I have already done everything to the extent of memorization and I don't think redoing these same tests over again will help me much, keep in mind that I never take tests just for the sake of taking them, I actually go over every question in detail

3) if I retake in december would I still have a chance this cycle?

please feel free to ask me anything, I will try my best to answer, don't worry too much about your practice science scores, I was really surprized with my science scores, I never scored anywhere near these scores in any of my practice tests, so the science section of the test is easier than any practice test out there.

Where did you apply?

I think you might still be okay at some schools. Some schools have cut-offs for sections and others don't. Your sciences are solid. Some schools overlook QR. However some schools focus on PAT and RC. You might as well call and ask and see what they say. Also some schools have GPA cut-offs. I can't really tell you anymore but to do some research and call the schools. If you do re-take it I've heard schools will put your application "On Hold". Let us know what schools you applied to and then maybe people will have specific knowledge about those schools.

I think that 16 might be below the cut off for a lot of schools. Call up the schools and see if they want you to retake the dat.

Answer: Heres what Ive gotten from calling schools and showing them my gpa and dat scores, NOTHING. They usually give a generic answer like "GPA and the DAT aren't everything we look at your volunteering, personal statement, etc also" The only thing that I have found out is that after you apply to these schools and you don't get in or you get waitlisted, some counselors are really helpful and they tell you exactly what was weak in your application and what you can do to strengthen your app like retaking certain classes or if they feel some section on your DAT was too low by their standards, but the bad side is that you do have to apply to find this out cuz most likely they won't help you for free.

2) if i have to retake, what would I do different for pat, I have already done everything to the extent of memorization and I don't think redoing these same tests over again will help me much, keep in mind that I never take tests just for the sake of taking them, I actually go over every question in detail

For the PAT i took the KAPLAN in class course which also has access online. Doing the PAT in class helped a bit as far as figuring out strategies to tackle different problems, however I got the most help from all the online PAT quizzes and tests. Im sorry to say it but at least for me I think the best thing to do is just keep practicing and watch your timing. I know the PAT doesn't come easy to everyone, it wasn't easy the first time i cam e across it but after I was done with Kaplan i got a 21, go figure. My suggestion is that if you do have the time and commitment to retake the test I would do what you had done for all the other sections the same since you did well, but for QR and the PAT I would really pick it up a notch and possibly retake the KAPLAN course at least for the online material if you are still eligible to do so for free.

This is very true because i felt the KAPLAN tests at least towards the end of the course were harder then the actual DAT but because they were harder, the DAT didn't seem that bad. It depends on the schools each one I think has their own deadlines as far as their DAT but for most schools also they won't process your application until you take the test, so do it sooner if you can but i do think the cutoff for most schools is December or January.

Hope this helps and good luck
