I took the DAT a few weeks ago and finally registered for this site. Tell me what you guys think...and I know theyre not ideal scores but this is my 2nd time taking it and hopefully I have somewhat of a shot this time around.

PAT 20
BIO 20👍
GCHEM 18
OCHEM 17
RC 21👍
QR 15😡
TS 18
AA 18

SGPA: 3.1 (roughly)
CGPA: 3.3 (roughly)
GradGPA: 3.4

I know my GPAs arent that phenomenal but I graduated undergrad a year ago and have been doing a Masters in Healthcare MGMT and have been taking upper level bio classes to help with that. I have also been shadowing a dentist for over 100 hrs so hopefully all of this adds up and gives me a shot for an interview or 2.

Let me know what you guys think.

Can anyone tell me what schools I have the best shot of getting into with these scores?

Heres a little breakdown for all those that are interested. I spent approximately 1 month doing this. Most of my efforts were spent on the sciences.

PAT: I only did practice tests from kaplan because I was already somewhat familiar with all the different types of questions from having already taken the DAT once and studying for it then. My score actually went down this time around from a 22 from the first test which Im not exaclty thrilled about.

BIO: I read all through the Kaplan book. Understood the concepts and did many many MANY practice problems. First I went through all the practice problems at the end of each chapter in the Kaplan book until I knew them thoroughly, while taking notes and going back to learn anything I was even slightly unaware of. I went through the entire DAT Destroyer book TWICE. And by this I dont mean just doing the problems but also understanding the reasons behind it. I think this book does an amazing job with the science sections. I also took the three Top Score tests on their CD. I went up 3 points from the first DAT by doing this. The questions on the DAT are basically very random but very similar to DAT Destroyer. Also, around the same time that I took the DAT, I was taking Anatomy and Physiology 2 and had already taken Anatomy and Phys1 and I believe that these classes helped me tremendously with the bio section.

GCHEM: This is definately not my cup of tea but i basically did the same thing I did for bio for this section as well. I went up 4 points by doing this. THere were more conceptual questions than calculations...i recall about 6-8 calculations but they were pretty simple. If u understand the main ideas behind all the major equations, you should have no problem with the calculations.

OCHEM: I stayed the same on both tests in this section, although I felt like I studied much better this time around. I religiously memorized all the reactions but unfortunately was only faced with 4-5 reactions on the real test. There were only 2 Spectroscopy questions.

RC: For this section I used the "seach and destroy" method. I was in the zone throughout the whole thing and was even left with about 5 mins upon completing the 3rd passage. I didnt study or prepare myself at all for this section. Believe it or not, I didnt even read one passage prior to taking the real DAT.

QR: I dont know what to say about this secition. Although I went up 2 points I am still not happy with this score. I used DAT destroyer mainly and understood and memorized all the formulas. I just feel that no matter how much you study for this section or how many practice problems you do, you will always be thrown rediculous questions that just dont allow you to finish in time. I couldnt finish about 5 questions and was forced to guess on those. Im sure many of you can agree with me on this.

If you have any other questions please feel free to ask.

I would retake if I were you. I think those are average scores, but with your GPA not being so hot, I would consider a retake. I applied last year with a GPA 3.4 and AA17/TS18 and didn't work out for me. Good luck!!

predentstudent1: many people who used destroyer got at least 20 or above, do you think destroyer actually helped your GC and OC?

It depends. How have you been doing in your upper division science classes. If its between 3.6-4, than you have a good shot. Your overall GPA isn't bad, its your science GPA thats a little on the lower side. I still think you will be fine, however. If you are a well rounded student than apply. Make sure to apply to many schools. GL

rto223: yeah i think youre right it may not have helped me much but iv done well in gchem and ochem classes (no lower than Bs) so hopefully thatll help out when adcoms are going through my app. but the main point is, as you can see in my breakdown, that destroyer did help me improve from my first DAT. It may not be in the 20s for gchem but i improved drastically. Although i did stay the same in ochem😕

topdent1: my main problem that contributed to a low science gpa was biology (a D in one) and physics (all Cs) in undergrad. I have retaken 2 of the prereq. bios earned above a B in both and have taken 2 upper level bios (human anatomy & phys 1 and 2 and earned a B and an A respectively). I am planning on taking 3 more by the end of fall 2008. Unfortunately that D in one of the bio classes will haunt the crap out of me but I have definately brought myself up. Id like to believe that im a well rounded student becuase iv taken all kinds of different courses, iv done a summer HCOP program for dentistry, iv shadowed, im doing a masters while taking these upperlevel bios. I just wish i can land an interview, i think thatll increase my chances a lot. Oh and i applied to 13 schools....hope thats enough

anyone else get in this year with stats around the same as mine?

i have had one interview but it does not look so promising as of yet. hopefully i hear from them soon and hope its good news!!!

this cycle has been very frustrating. If i dont get in, does anyone have any advice on what i should do to improve my chances even further for next year? any advice would be appreciated! thanks.

You had a chance to shine when you did your post-bac, but your 3.4 isn't quite cuttin' it. Also I think you needed 19s across the board to be more competitive.

Then again you had one interview so there's something positive.

Oh if this cycle doesn't work out for you, perhaps you should look into doing a SMP.

yeah youre probably right....im gonna have to step it up even more next semester. and thanks for the advice but could you explain what an SMP is? i am not familiar with what that is. thanks.

i would study 4 it just one more time...that QR will hurt ya...i think u can improve a little bit on the sections u got lower scores in and then ull be set

thanks alot for the link!! i feel like i still need to improve my gpa a bit so i have been stacking up upper division sciences and have been getting mostly As and want to do that for the next semester as well. if i dont get in in august, i will look into doing an SMP. thanks for the advice.
