*updated* - I'm selling some of my study materials on sales section

http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=618138

Hey guys, I finally took my DAT today. But before I go into that I just want to thank everyone on this forum. Though I have not posted on this forum much before, I have received much help from this forum with not only DAT but with why to choose dentistry, school selection, application, and personal statement as well. Thank you.

After spending a lot of time in an office and a clinic, I've decided this year to pursue dentistry, and I'm excited to let you all know that I'm in this year's application cycle. Ok, so I guess enough about me and dentistry.

I just wanted to give something back to this forum by sharing my experience with preparing for DAT. Feel free to ask me any questions you might have. I can't guarantee that I'll have the best answer, but I'll try my best to help you guys out as much as I can.

So, to prepare for DAT, I used Kaplan book (The one that comes from the course). I think the book is very similar to the blue book. I didn't take the course, but my friend who took it gave me his copy. I also had a copy of kaplan's short practice sections on different subject. I first went through the Kaplan book while taking a little bit of notes.

Taking NOTES:
For Biology, I eventually made a word document of bio notes and kept on adding things on it as I went through different materials. It helped me to review the ones I missed/had trouble remembering near the test date. It ended up being around 14 pages font size 10.

For OChem and GChem, I had few pages of notes of different concepts, laws, equation...etc. I also had a log of all the questions I've missed. For OChem, I wrote down all the reactions, which ended up being few pages.

Math: I just had a half a sheet of few unit conversion factors and trig equations.

After having gone through the Kaplan book and their exercises, I went through DAT Destroyer. My thought on Destroyer is that, although it's harder than the actual DAT, it helped me to identify and review topics I was weak at. ALWAYS, go through the answer key even if you got it right and think you know it well (there could always be things you didn't know). Again, I added different things onto my notes as I went through Destroyer. I also timed my self while taking 40 bioQ's, 30 gchemQ's, and 30 ochemQ's.

Then I bought Achiever and took it three days straight leading up to test date. I think you should space them out if you can, and have more time to review them. (I decided to buy these last minute, so I had no choice but to do that). Achiever is definitely harder than the real test. Again, I added more onto my notes.

Ok so the real DAT

BIO - definitely easier than Achiever. Not as much detail oriented questions. Nothing really unexpected.

GChem - again easier than Achiever, but not by alot. Not as much calculation. Pretty straight forward.

OChem - easier than Achiever, few IR and NMR.

PAT - LOT easier than Achiever, EXCEPT angle comparison. Angle section was always my easiest section, but on the real DAT it was actually one of the harder ones. Key hole and 3 sides questions on Achiever are A LOT harder than the real DAT.

RC - man...this was the section I worried about the most. I used search and destroy after quickly skimming through the passage in 2-3 minutes. Took notes of key words. Manage to finish on time. Comparable to Achiever I thought.

Math - A little easier than Achiever. No hard probability or Trig stuff. No unit conversion btw km/mile, L/gallon, etc.

Ok so here are my scores from Achiever

Test 1 AA-22, TS-23, BI-20, GC- 28, OC-25, PAT-22, RC-21, QR-24
Test 1 AA-20, TS-19, BI-18, GC- 20, OC-17, PAT-25, RC-20, QR-25
Test 1 AA-22, TS-20, BI-20, GC- 19, OC-23, PAT-23, RC-21, QR-26

And the real DAT!!!

AA-27(100.0)
TS-28(99.9)
BI-27(99.7)
GC-30(100.0)
OC-26(98.1)
PAT-25(99.7)
RC-20(72.4) - I'm actually the most happy about this section. English is my secondary language =)
QR-30(100.0)

So yeah I hope this post was somewhat helpful to you guys, especially the ones that are preparing for DAT. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask me. Also, if you want more details of how I studied, ask me. I'll be glad to help anyone out. OK, I think I'll be keeping up with the forum through the whole application cycle. Again, thank you guys!

Hello, University of Penn is ivy league and is just as good as UCLA or Harvard.

Hey guys, here's the scan of my score as promised. Hopefully this will clear the doubts?! anyways, sorry for not getting back to you guys yet. I've been pretty busy catching up on different things I've been missing out on. I'm a little too tired now but I'll take some time out sometime this week to respond to diff questions and request.

On the other hand, I wanted to ask you guys for your opinion on something. I submitted total of 14 primary applications (I didn't know what I was going to get on DAT) and now will be doing secondaries. But I was wondering given that I got the scores I got and that I know I want to stay in California, if I should not send in some of the secondaries to save money. Let me know what you think. My GPA is around 3.74 overall and 3.81 science. EC are 90hr volunteer (private office and clinic), honors, research, dental lab, camp financial coordinator, etc. Thanks guys.

My top choice as of now is UoP
.

u of p = university of pacific?

lol you serious, all this time and i thought that UofP was same as UPenn.

i guess that explains your 18 in RC...i'll help you out:

given that I got the scores I got and that I know I want to stay in California

My top choice as of now is UoP.

besides, from my personal experience, i've never heard of penn referred as u of p...either penn or upenn

damnnnnnnnnn wth!!! congratulationss!!! I definitely need to apply to more schools now...I think the competition is going to be freaking tough this year. Uh!! I wish I would have done better....20aa/22TS/18PAT is like average now 🙁

WOW!😱

How did you tackle QR? Skip on hard ones and come back later or you plough through from beginning till finish?

Hey guys,

First of all, again, thank you guys for really congratulating me about the test score. I really mean it when I say that you guys could do it too. It wasn't something that came easily for me either, I put in hours and sacrificed time with friends/work/volunteer here and there too.

So I'll just go through what I did with whatever details I can remember. Sorry if this just ends up being too much unnecessary details.

List of Materials I used (even if only a little bit of it): Kaplan course book (I think it's very similar to the Blue Book), Kaplan exercises on 6 topics, DAT destroyer (2007 copy), Achiever, Kaplan free online practice test, Princeton Review books for bio, Exam Kracker 1001 questions for Ochem and Gchem.

I sort of started to review for DAT in my last semester of college (Spring 08), but I didn't have as much time as I thought I would, and so by the time I graduated, I haven't finished going over the Kaplan review book. I actually didn't get to seriously start studying until around 2nd week of June, because I was working on the application (PS, researching what schools to apply to, etc.)

Ok so I first went through the Kaplan review book all three subjects at once (couple chapters at a time for each subject). As I went through it, I underlined the book and did the review questions that were at the end of each chapters. I also took notes on plain blank paper of things I wasn't sure about. If there were THINGS THAT I WAS VERY FAMILIAR WITH, I didn't include them in it. And this is how I took notes through rest of my studying time including the day before the exam. Constantly updating my notes as I come across anything that I didn't know before.

Real quick on my "notes". For biology I first took notes on different topics by hand, but eventually after realizing that there are just SO MUCH information to remember for this section, I decided to do it on computer so it's easier to edit. Chem and Ochem I didn't use computer, because often times you have to draw molecules or write equations and I didn't want to spend time on computer figuring how to do that. As I've said before I only added things I wasn't sure about. For example, I had much more notes about ecology, evolution, animal behavior, and CLASSIFICATION than say...cell structure, because I was already familiar with lot of cell structure. So in total I had 14 pages of bio notes typed up, OCHEM reactions written down on couple pages, 2 pages of Ochem questions I missed on any test/problem sets, 1 page of Gchem concepts and equations (mainly from Kaplan review book), 2 pages of GChem questions I missed on any tests/problem sets. The whole point of taking notes is that I write down things that I was lacking so that I can review them at different times (eating, sometimes real quick look at them before sleeping, and of course reviewing them the day before the test and the test day). Always, as you go over your own personalized notes, highlight/mart the things that you haven't memorized yet, so you can come back to it later.

After going through Kaplan book once, I went over it really quickly one more time. after the second time, I reviewed my notes once through, then started with kaplan problem sets. I always timed myself to see in which areas I would be short on time. (Eventually timing didn't matter too much on all sections other than RC because I was doing them well in time). Key here is to really go over ALL the questions and all of the answer choices (right or wrong). If something's totally new, go read up on it (Kaplan, Princeton Review, WIKIPEDIA!!!), then ...add them to you notes. Answer key for the Kaplan problem sets were really helpful I thought. After finishing them, I decided to buy DAT destroyer after seeing good reviews on SDN. I got last year's version (brand new) for $75. I went through these, again, timing myself. I went through Bio first, then ochem, then Gchem (40, 30, 30 at a time). I made an answer sheet (just lot of lines on blank paper using excel) so that I don't have to mark the question. Don't forget to use scratch paper separately as you would on the real test. Again, go through the answer key thoroughly, and update your notes. I really like Destroyer. It was harder than the real test and Some questions were really random, but for the most part it was helpful. After finishing Destroyer, I went through Exam Kracker's 1001 questions for Ochem and very little bit of Gchem (MCAT). I really like their Ochem book. It goes through different topics. Answer keys are not that good at explaining them though.

By the time I went through all this it was about 5 days before the exam. I took the Kaplan's free practice test, then went over the answers in DETAIL, and add more to my notes. then I bought Achiever and took them one a day for last three days before the test day. I don't recommend this. If you're getting them, give yourself more time to space them out and also review.

Achiever review: harder than the actual test for science sections. RC was comparable to the actual test. Math was harder. For PAT, key holes and TFE were lot harder than the real test, but angles were easier than the real test.

Went over the answers in detail, then add to notes. As you can see from my OP, I didn't do nearly as well on the Achiever tests as the real one, so don't worry if you don't score high on these just make sure you know them by the time you're done reviewing them. I also went over DAT destroyer for the second time through the three days I was taking the Achiever tests.

Important thing I think, is to review the same materials at least twice if not more and making a personal notes on things you don't have them down yet and review those notes multiple times. I used Wikipedia a LOT and some googling as well if not on Wikipedia.

Bio: there's just way too much information to remember. I spent more time for bio than gchem and ochem. i don't think it's really possible to be completely be ready for this.
Gchem: Kaplan covers this well.
Ochem: Try to focus on the reactions (reactants, things added&catalysts, products)

Math: I really didn't spend much time in it other than few Kaplan exercises and the full length exams I took. I always felt comfortable with math so this was my least worry. I just went over some probability stuff and trig stuff. I didn't see it on my real test, but on practice tests, I saw some unit conversion between Mile/Km, L/gallon, Kg/lbs, so I memorized the conversion factors.

PAT: Fortunately, this section came sort of easy for me. I didn't have any tricks or anything I just went through them. For the hole punch section, expect half folds (these were not in Kaplan exercise but were in Achiever), angles were pretty hard on the real test, key holes are straight forward. For cube counting, I just counted them for each question, always counting through each layer from bottom to top.

RC: This is the section I was most worried about because I'm not a fast reader, and for the same reason I feel like I can't give much advice on this. I did use Search and Destroy and I really like this method. I skimmed over the article in 2-3 min writing down some keywords, then hit the questions. Not many tone questions, and even those by the time you're done with other questions, you can do them.

In terms of hours, I was studying almost 10 hours a day for about last two weeks leading up to the test day. Mostly in library. Before that about 4 hrs?? but it varied.

So yeah, that's most of what I did. I hope this can be helpful to some of you. Sorry if it was just really unnecessarily long.

Lastly, for notes that many of you have requested. If you just read through my long post, this would make more sense now I think. My notes were made specifically for me. what I mean by that is that it only contained things that I was lacking in. It wasn't a very comprehensive notes that covered all topics. Also, I can honestly say the half of the learning from the notes is the taking the notes and editing the notes. As I reviewed my notes over and over, I also took out sections that I felt like I had them down, so that the most updated notes are always narrowed down to things I still needed to memorize. So I decided that I won't be passing my notes out on this forum. I hope you will understand that this is not me not wanting you all to do well on the exam, but me doing what I think will really be helpful for you all and fair to everyone. But as I've said before, any specific questions on topics, study method, anything else, I'll be more than happy to answer them. Also, for those of you who messaged me specific questions, I'll reply soon. I don't think I can do them now though. Sorry.

I just want to encourage you guys to really study hard and don't get discouraged. It helped me to picture myself being a good dentist when studying got frustrating. You guys can do it!! but it won't come easy, You're going to have to put time and energy into it. Good luck and study hard. Feel free to comment or ask any other questions. Thanks.

By the way, I still need some feedback on my school list. =)

Congratulations on your PHENOMENAL scores!! =) Thanks for your long post. I'll definitely take your advice and work on personal notes.

As for your schools, i honestly think you could limit your secondaries to CA schools if you were sure about staying in the state. Your GPA, EC's, and scores should get into any of the schools. (USC, UoP, UCLA, etc)

Hi Calguitar, I saw your score(very impressive); i was on the verge to give up, but you've given me strenght to keep going. If it's possible can you send me your notes for everything? God bless!

I just wanted to answer some questions that I might not have answered.

Was this your first time taking?

Yes

Could you break down your study routine? Like what you studied on what day/week and all that?

For the last 3 weeks leading up to the test day, I studied as much as I can (~8 -10hours). I tried to get at least 7 hours of sleep every night, and I also hit the gym about two times a week. I didn't have specific days assigned to a specific subject. I just went with wherever I left off the night before. I used my library on campus during the day, and an empty classroom when library closed

Hey nice scores what were ur reading topics please.

My reading passages were on piano, cell signaling, and ....can't remember the last one at the moment haha...(will update when I do)

WOW! Another high scorer. Wish I had those scores. Can you write your study methods in detail? What did you do the week before the exam? I have my exam coming up in a week.

Some suggestion I can make for the last week before the test is to be taking the full length tests at least every other day, so that you're used to spending 4 and half hours on computer and finishing through. Also, I would go over the questions you've answered few more times. and your notes of course. Basically I felt like towards the end, it was more important to make sure that I know the stuff i've gone over already than getting more new information into my head.

WOW!😱

How did you tackle QR? Skip on hard ones and come back later or you plough through from beginning till finish?

If I thought the question was hard or will require too much time, I marked it and skipped it first. I would also mark the ones that I wanted to come back and redo at the end. I had about 15-20 min left when I went through the test for the first time.

Ok so those are it I think. Hope you guys' studying's going well.

I am a ******* compared to you. Those are great DAT scores, but even more phenomenal Achiever scores. Achiever has killed my confidence. Someone mentioned you not having any problems getting into USC. I agree, but do not waste your brain by going there. Good job. You did really well.

Alright, I kind of dont believe this primarily because only 1 person out of 8897 people last year who took the dat got a 27 AA. So are you telling me for the 2008 cycle you are the one or maybe the 1 out of lets just say a possible 5. Only 5 people last year out of again 8897 who took the exam got a AA of a 25. 20 got a 24AA, and 47 got a 23. These scores you list sound bizarre Only 126 people who took the exam got a TS score of a 23 or above.

Why can't you believe it? So he could be the one this year. Hey out of curiosity... where are you getting that info? Is it in the ADEA book? Could you also tell me how many got a AA of 22, 21, 20? Anybody else know?

I can understand a troll posting scores like these and then just watching as people go nuts... but this guy has written out some detailed, comprehensive posts about his scores, scanned them, basically has gone "above and beyond" and if you still don't believe him you're helpless 😛

Anyways, good job man... you inspire me and many others here to kick the DAT's ass. Get ready for interviews!

really? Can someone confirm these stats please

Wow people seriously love to hate those that get higher then average scores. Why is it hard to believe someone can score as he did. I find it funny that people on SDN are so skeptical.

I want to congratulate you on your scores and i'm sure even without saying this you probably know you're a sure in at any dental school with those scores.

I would like to add the one of my friends scores a 30 on OC and a 29 on Bio and then went on to score 23 GC, 18 RC, 16 QR, and 16 PAT. If he can score 30 and 29 on two sections why can't there be a person that can score those marks all around. It's not like this guy posted 30's throughout. BTW the reason my friend did so well on sciences and messed up on the others are this: He didn't study for any other section but the sciences and only a little math and English was his second language. So i'm sure if he studied other sections he would have done much better on them also.

Hey, DAThasruinedme, I just want to let you know that in no way I'm faking my score...I'm not sure why I would do that in the first place then spend lot of time updating "hopefully helpful" details of how I studied. I guess I don't have to convince you of this if you just can't believe it, but I really didn't lie about my score. I worked hard, got a score higher than expected, and I'm thankful for it. Good luck studying to you tho!!

Hey calguitar, your scores were really high and I kind of didnt expect anyone to get a score like that so I was kind of skeptical. But apparently you did..i am sure you put in all the hard work to get that score..so congratualtions. You'll probably have a smooth ride from here on end. For some reason alot of people are scoring very high in this 2008 cycle..i wonder what the average will be when the ada does its frequency tables. But anyways congratualtions your work has paid off.

Wow your scores are insane. I feel like the dental schools will come to you, why bother applying at all lol? ........Seriously great job impressive

Yeah DAThasruinedme, and you also need to apologise...

The only problem with your scores is a 30 is impossible on the DAT because the scores are based on the difficulty of the questions, so even if you get them all correct some questions are easier than others making the top score a 29, nice try

Dood,

It varies with the tests you get. Yes, on some test, there are subjects you can only get a 29, but on other tests you are able to get a 30.

I dont see why he has to lie? He also posted his score report, which looks really legit. Stop the hating.

People just loooooooooooooove hatin' cause they can't stand seeing their own scores of 17s

Haha it does look legit, but the bottom half is cut off, so he in theory could have photoshopped mdangs. Who knows, but congrats on the scores man!

I just can't believe how gullible everyone is.

I don't understand why you can't believe this? Maybe it's not that people are gullible, it's that you're too dumb to realize that obtaining this score is possible, although, statistically rare. Stop sippin' on that hatorade. It's bad for you health.

It is not impossible, I've seen it before. I've seen a friend got a 30 before on PAT on real printed paper. You are making a fool out of yourself by thinking it is not possible. Check the score chart on most DAT practice book, you will see several possibilities for 30.

This guy's story is on a Korean newspaper.

He looks like a smart kid. 👍

your score is soooo amazing.....Congrat!...gosh..👍
I actually didn't believe your math score until I read the article..haha
I was figuring out this genius must be a Korean..!!
although I am a Korean, I hate this math section..-.-;

wow...seems like there alot of Berkeley students applying this cycle....

and they're all doing well on the DATs.

😵 surprised? heh

SDN scores seem so high. when i look at scores that have been accepted at schools for the past couple of years, some people get in with like 17, 18, 19...

here it seems the general thought that unless you get 20's your in trouble....

its b/c ppl that get lower then 20s somehow feel inadequate compared to the super brains that mostly post.

like the superfreak above.... amazing.

holly shizzz..thats freakin amazing!! thats just crazy. u gotta tell how u did it, i mean forrreal, thats crazy scores u got there.

unbelievably well done ... congratulations!! have you considered brain surgery?

Calguitar,
You're truly an inspiration.
I just took the DAT and got my *ss handed to me.
I WAY overstudied everything Bio and didn't focus enough on the fundamentals in the other sections (much to my detriment).

One of the things I found interesting though was that there were some curve-ball Bio questions that I didn't expect (mostly centered around embryology).
Well, I recently came to find out that the DAT has a "Scope of Test" download that will tell you everything that is fair game for the test....which I didn't know about, and so have just been studying anything and everything (not bueno).
The reason I bring this up is that upon reading the "Scope of Test" from the ADA, I noticed that there are 3 categories which I never knew were fair game for the Bio part of the test and (unless I'm misunderstanding the phraseology or verbiage), Kaplan didn't cover either (so I'm feeling a little miffed about that, but anyway)....

The 3 new sections in question are:
  1. Experimental Cell Biology
  2. Experimental Embryology
  3. Genetic Technology

Did you study any specific books for these three sub-sections of biology?
I know you can get books on "Cell Biology", "Embryology" and "Genetics", but when you tack on the other things in the category title ("Experimental" and "Technology", respectively), there are very few review books or overview books. Most of the resources I'm finding with titles such as the ones in the list above are lab workbooks, or research papers regarding one very specific experiment.

So, any feedback on what you read to cover those topics and not be caught off-guard on some of those "non-traditional" biology questions, would be greatly appreciated.

Once again, fantastic scores!
You have put a needed salve on my wounded ego and have inspired me to study myself into PhD-dom before my next test.

haha. that totally is something a korean newspaper would publish 🙄

Man, I cannot read this language, but I did not need to in order to understand the scope of these scors. These scores are simply amazing. My hats off to you sir, calguitar, well done.

Man...first of all, I don't know how bruinlove found that article, but I must say I'm a little embarrassed to have that posted on here. Haha, well that was actually kind of fun and it made my parents and grandma really happy, so I guess it's all good.

Sorry to everyone whom I still haven't replied to yet, I'll get to them today.

Two things I want to mention,

1. for RC section, I think I forgot to mention something I did that saved me a minute or so. During the break, I numbered 1 through 20 on three pages of the laminated papers they give you. This way, when you get to RC, you don't have to waste time numbering your paper, and you can get started on the passage right away.

2. Lot of people were asking me about the notes. Again, though I won't be sending out my whole notes for the reasons I explained before, if anyone wants it, I will email out a page or two of it, so that you can see how I was making notes for myself. PM me if you want them.

Thanks for all the congratulations guys. Good luck with studying!
