BTW 3.5 gpa.. tryin to get into any dental school that looks at PAT and an 18 overall. are there any schools that look at the pat's? (just wondering)

hey im not one of those guys with high 20s....in fact im takin my DATs for the first time in 2 days! however, i will tell you that an AA and TS of 18 with a 3.5 GPA isn't the BEST score for most schools...unless you have TON of EC/shadowing/experience with dentistry and stellar LORs and essay. People with 17s and 3.1 and 3.2 have gotten in, but it's pretty rare. I would suggest you apply for the next cycle and see if you can retake the DAT over the summer or something and even if you can bump it up to a 19...you will be in a much better shape! Also, i've been actively looking at dental school reqs, and to my knowledge, there isn't any school that looks at PAT alone...sorry!
Gluck and take some time off before you get back to studyin! I know how you must feel...I can't wait to be done myself! 🙂

Those scores hover around those of the average admitee. You're GPA is a little above average, and assuming you are outgoing and have some extra-cirics under your belt, I'm sure you will get a couple of interviews. Also depends on where you go to school...

And if you actually check the forums, no one actually puts other people down about scores. At most they are objective about what they say. For example I think 19s are OK but nothing impressive....if I got a 19 myself then I wouldn't be too impressed and I would go on to say I did alright but nothing extraordinary.

so what is the purpose of the PAT's?
is my 18 and 20 on PAT, better than a 19 and 15 on their pat???
i was extremely tired after taking the PAT section, oh wait my computer actually crashed in the middle, it cost me 6 min.. but i think it wouldnt change my overall score.

We have almost the same scores and the same GPA...except my PAT was 19. I'm retaking, only because I don't want to risk the chance of being passed over by some school that only wants students with 20 or above. I've done a lot of shadowing, volunteering, and am going to start some research in the summer, but I don't know if that will matter because my DAT scores don't show my capability as a student all around.

It's your choice if you want to retake or not, but just remember that you'll have to work harder to get into dental school. the national average was between a 17 and 18 last cycle, so I'm guessing it went up a little bit more for those applying for 2010.

so far, what I've heard about the PAT is that it's useful because when you're actually working in the patient's mouth, you're looking through a mirror, and you can't actually see all the angles of the objects that you're working with. I don't know what the angle ranking or the holepunching have to do with this, but key holes and pattern folding I can understand...

I don't think school's really consider the PAT unless it's really high or really low, I would anywhere from a 16 is pretty low, and at 22 or more is kind of high...just my opinion though.

anyone getting a 15 in any subject should do a retake. the schools that you apply to probably have a minimum acceptance number for each section...hopefully, this helps!

i'm just trying to think positive guys thats all. if i retake i think i should retake it during the summer since i have a really heavy load this semester.
but u have to remember, like what u said the avg is an 18 or 19. so for every 20+ score you"ll also find a 17 or 18 student that got accepted. i think it all depends on your application and what school ur tryin to get in. i know i wont get into a 'perfect' school, but at least any that can get a DDS in 4 yrs. thats all i'm prayin 4.

i believe angle ranking will help in looking at x-rays later on. x-rays have very minute details that you must be trained to see.....and angle ranking helps build the ability to find things that may be very close together on x-rays....nerves, abcesses, pockets, etc.. although it might help in various other aspects too but thats just what i think/have heard.

I know you are trying to be positive, thats nice. At the same time you really shouldn't be too happy with mediocrity IMO. Like I've said in other posts its one thing to try your best and get a 18 but its another thing to settle for it. This is really the type of mentality you should have with (re)taking the DAT, aiming high and wanting to do better, even if it means being dissatisfied with mediocrity. I'm not saying beat yourself up about not getting a 20, but what you are doing now is defending your past mediocre score by trying to rationalize "it's not that bad" to other people who for the most part don't think its terrible but not that great. If we think that, ADCOMs probably think that.

Having your score is sort of like applying to Cal or UCLA undergrad with a 3.5-3.6 HS GPA. Its not bad, but competition is so fierce that relative to other people it just isn't super competetive. I'm not trying to put you down but I think a lot of people here don't see eye to eye with you on how you're trying to rationalize your score. We've seen a lot of people who say "I got an 18 but I want to retake to get a better score and be more competetive" not so much coming back to thread and posting a defensive rationale to each critique one receives.

how many times do i have to state this "i know my scores aren't too high". i wish i could retake it but i have a heavy semester. I'm just asking if anyone scored around my range, that have been accepted. I'm not applying to top schools (NYU, UCLA, Columbia) but normal, average ones. i dont consider any school thats horrible, but i do think some are better then others. the avg of most schools are around 19. the only way for me to get accepted this year is probably by luck. everyone know's that. but once your in, DAT scores do not matter. this test has nothing to do with how well you can accomplish in dental school. thats just my opinion. i live with 3 other room mates in dental school that all scored a 19. they are kill other students that studied 3 yrs for this exam and ended up gettin a 22. so my point is, DAT is impt but there are other factors involved in your application

it deponds. I think many schools wieght GPA more than DAT(assume in mid range DAT 18).because they believe GPA is achieivment of 4 (or less)years continusely hard working. but DAT is result of 2-6 months hardcore studing.

thank god. now ur givin me straight answers. i'll be completing my bach. degree in biochemistry in 3 yrs. without taking any summer/spring coarses. will that help me in anyway.
oh the reason is because i took many AP classes during high school, and avg. 18 credits a semester in a 4-yr university (mostly science credits) and a few ellectives (such as religion and ethics) in a community college during the nights and weekends, just to hang out with old high school friends. so i avg about 21 credits a semester. there is a huge difference between my university level coarses compared to comm. college's.
as you can see, i only had couple of weeks to study for my DAT's due to lack of time.

I'm not applying to top schools (NYU, UCLA, Columbia) but normal, average ones. i dont consider any school thats horrible, but i do think some are better then others.

Definitely take NYU off that list and replace it with Upenn, Uconn Stony, and Harvard. Your scores admittedly are not outstanding and do not distinguish you, however they do not disqualify you either.You will need to find an alternate way to shine.

They grad from normal undergraduate colleges. Read my first couple posts writing about scrubs like you thinking you’re part of the admissions committee.

kingo, klutzy is far from a douche - he is a venerated member of the forum. You are obviously getting testy about the fact that we aren't praising your score and that we are being frank about things.

Here's a fact of life - my GPA is low, my DATs aren't bad. My chances aren't looking that great but there is a slight glimmer. Your GPA is pretty stable, so long as you don't get any Cs till the time you apply you are good to go I think. If need be you can retake the DAT.

Heres a piece of advice - when you ask a question take the responses and use them productively. The take home lesson - never ask questions you don't want answers to. If you ask anyways just be prepared for the truth and don't take offense by it....your scores are what they are.

I had a 18/19/21 but had no time to retake so I went with it. I got lucky and I'm in, but if I would of had time to retake I would of. You wanted to hear it from someone who got in with an AA of 18... Well there you have it.... RETAKE!!! If you are still not sure... This app process cost me about 15K because with mediocre stats you have to apply to a $hit load of schools... It's only worth it if you get in... (seriously I feel really lucky to be in)

Wow, I haven't checked in with SDN for awhile...
Anyways, I can't really give you definite answer of whether you will get accepted this cycle or not. Every cycle is different...
I'm in pretty much in same boat as you....
But I do think that there is always a possibility to get accepted.
But I also have to agree with the others... If you are not satisfied with the scores and do not have confidence that you will get in this cycle, then I strongly suggest you to study harder and retake the DAT...
I understand that you have had overwhelming semesters but just think about what you really want to be and be motivated and keep pushing yourself!

Anyways, I hope this helps a little! Keep UP!! and NEVER EVER GIVE UP!!!😀
