So I just got finished with the dreaded test. Here's the unfortunate breakdown...

PAT 20
QR 18
RC 21
BS 21
GC 18
OC 19
TS 19
AA 19

I know my scores are about average for those matriculated, BUT it's unfortunately combined with the extremely low G.P.A. of 3.01...Dyou think they look at which university you graduated from??? I completed 3.5yrs at a fairly tough university (biology program ranked top 20 in the nation) and then I transferred to a state university and I'm finishing up my last semester. I've got like 150+ credit hours on my belt when I graduate, but what I noticed was that the state university was SIGNIFICANTLY easier than my previous university. If I had been going to school over here the whole time, I would've nailed all of my classes. It's soooo much easier to get a higher G.P.A. from an easier school, yet at the end of the day the Dental schools only look at what that G.P.A. is. Or do they also put in mind as to where one graduated from?? Cuz I can tell you from experience, that it's unfairly easier to get a good grade from a ****tier school. Please let me know if I need to retake...or even bother applying...

Thats what the DAT is there for. It allows Dental schools to compare two individuals even if they went to schools with different degree of difficulty than each other. If you went to a difficult university that has a top biology program, you will have higher scores and it will tell the story.

I feel similarly about my university compared to state schools. Dental schools definitely can see the school you graduated from, and obviously an Ivy or top-ranked university will stand out. If anything, i feel I was better prepared for the DAT than students at other schools due to the toughness of the education and caliber of instruction.
While they don't officially say that undergrad school matters, I've been told off the record that they do take it into consideration.

So you should be happy that you probably didn't have to study as much as others who just glossed over the material during their pre-req's. And with your undergrad school, you likely have a leg up on the competition.

Your DAT scores look fine as long as you're not shooting for Harvard or Columbia. Are you applying this cycle? Applying this late may hurt your chances a little, but I would still try it if i were you.

yes. I am applying this cycle. Im applying to University of Kentucky, University of Louisville, Meharry, Howard, and Ohio State. is it really that late to apply?? I haven't even looked at the application, I dont even know the deadlines...I mean I'm applying for next fall. Is it really that late??

I know exactly how you feel. I have a brother who is less smarter than me and goes to a different easier university than I am and is acing all his tests and getting really good grades. He has a really good GPA. I am working my ass off at my school and my GPA is still not that high compared to my brother's GPA. Me and him are both taking physics this semster and we both switched our exams that we took and I swear his exam was so easy I just wished I was at his school. He took my exam and did not get a single answer right.

This is where the DAT comes in. The DAT is supposed to be a standardized test for all students, therefore anyone who bull****ted his way in college and earned the very easy grades are less likely to do better than someone who worked his ass off in a harder school. Put it this way I would rather have a 3.3 GPA with a 24 DAT than a 3.9 GPA with 18 DAT.

Just to let you know, unless you are a minority dont think that you can get accepted into Meharry or Howard just because youre GPA falls within their average. Those schools admit minorities with low GPAs.

Well, most schools begin reviewing applications in August, or even in July. Since dental schools use rolling admissions, it actually DOES matter when you submit your app. The earlier, the better your chances are since spots are filled as applications as reviewed (in the order they are received). September is considered somewhat late since many people already have interviews at this point.
There are definitely people who have gotten in places applying in September, but I just wanted to let you know that this puts you at a bit of a disadvantage.

What state are you from?

OK, I'm from KY and applying to UK and U of L. Are you going to the open house this saturday?

No. I dont think Im even going to attend any open houses. But listen..is it too late to apply to UK and U of L???

I definitely think you should apply for this application cycle; however, don't beat yourself up if you aren't accepted. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but this application cycle has so extraordinarily high statistics! A retake might not be a bad idea if you don't hear anything. I do think your scores are competitive though and you definitely have a shot. I would emphasize your low GPA in your personal statement and address that, but don't point the blame on anyone or any university in particular. I would focus on how you learned from your mistakes and how you learned to prepare yourself differently for the DATs. Best of luck applying!

What did you use for your sciences? You have some pretty solid scores.
