Hi ALL,

PAT 19
QR 16
RC 15 ESLLL:scared:
Bio 22
Gchem 23
Ochem 21
science 22
a.a. 19

GPA 3.78 Plus research and publication and shadowing, and hopspital volunteering and other stuff... Great letters of rec

English is my second language I really struggled with this section and always worried about it I want to get in CA and I dont think I have a chance with this RC, 🙁there were a tone a tone of auther and hypothesis based questions, I ran out of time and for may I just skipped I didnt really read the third passage just tried to answer anything I can .

BIO : I have one word for you>>> DESTROYER u need to know it inside out and outside in. I had image but u'll know what it is as soon as u see it.. one gel question, also very straight forward... there some question that were so easy I kept reading it and thinking can be... this easy... but then agian i didnt score perfect i must have gotten a few wrong

Gchem:straight forward, I recommend on top of understaniding destroyer u should read AP Gchem from Barrons, it's welll explained, u should the math problems with a calculator for the destroyer cuz GChem on the real dat is ALL conceptual. like u need to be familiar with a concept such as VP and Boiling point and understand what happens when to the molecules and how does it increase or decrease...etc

Ochem also straight forward, nothing wierd or obscure except one that said which of the following is NOT aromatice and there were two that didnt have 4n+2 I have no idea why and whether it was an error, I thought I aced this section but I ended up with a 21 🙁

QR: it was ridiculously hard sooooo many word problems that I skipped, my hand was shaking and my heart was pounding and I kept telling my self DONT GIVE UP, there were a geometry shape of rectangles and squares that required an high IQ to connect the lines and fine the area within, but being the last section and given the face I dont hve a high IQ i could find the answer. frankly in my opinion dental scools dont give a $hit about your QR there is absolutely noooooo way that u could read that may word problems and get an 18 in time

RC: lots and lots of tone of auther on the last passage that had to do with motion or vision or some load or crap I had no idea ... it has always been my weekeness and there were vocab on the question that i didnt know what it means.....

although it's painful to go thru dat again thru the next 90 day of mylife, where clock is ticking but my life clock had bbenn stoped for the past 6-7 months, but my biggest problem is I HAVE NO IDEA HOW TO IMPROVE RC
not a clue...

anyways, BEST OF LUCK TO ALL OF U,
I will be around as I will be taking dat agian in sep.
Is there any one in my situation? do I have any company?????

For those of u that barely started studying the bottom line is while u still have to prepare for the unprictables, DAT is not as bad as u think, .

Any feedback, words of advice, is GREATLY appreciated....🙂

what kind of books or materials did you use to study for each section and how long did you study?
Thanks.🙂

You did really great for other sections. And yes, I recommend a retake.

As for how to improve your RC score, you might want to read A LOT of news articles from NYT and Wall Street Journal on a daily basis. Just pick any articles that interest you, and they don't have to be healthcare or science related. That's what I have been doing regularly, and it helped me achieve a 25 on RC even though I am an ESL student too.

great scores on all section even the RC... For an ESL student its great however dental schools have cut off.

If you want to improve your RC score, don't speak anything but English with anyone for the next 3 months. It works miracles. I understand English isnt your first language but make it your first and ONLY language for the next 3 months.

Read as much as you can. News papers. Articles about sports, crime, business, etc. Anything that's interesting and actually keeps you reading for a long time at a time.

After every paragraph or two, STOP and think to yourself and summarize what you read. Put it together.

Try to learn words that are fimiliar (you hear all the time) you could make a meaning for but you don't know the ACTUAL meaning of it.

Use the internet alot.

Read Journals of Health... The ones with Big words that you might not undrestand so that you get used to the level of difficulty.

You'll be fine.... next time if you still score low (which i'm sure you won't) just apply with it, you'll get in somewhere.

GOOD LUCK,

ps. what did you use for OCHEM and Bio and Gchem.

Thanks

Thanks for all the kind word, and replies...

I used just about anything that is out there:
for test materials I used: destroyer topscore achiver cliffs ap bio 5 tests kaplan subject tests, diag midterm final priceton work book and barron's DAT and any other full lenght test i could find from priceton

and for the reading of the basics: I first read from kaplan book and took a bunch of notes which I regret cuz i never refered to them. then as I was taking the 5 ap bio test i refered to the cliffs ap bio reading book to cover the holes. Also when I was studying destroyer I refered alot to the cambell and wiki. then the last week that I was reviewing stuff I decided to read schuams and read half of the book page by page in one day... my brain was on FIRE!! but in my experience and in my experience only there was no phlym crap or nothing form the plants nothing form the photosynthesis. nothing from biomes or ecology ...

I also had a physio question regarding the nephron, which required thought and no it wasnt abut the PCT having too may mitochondria. I didnt study for it but i took physio and I could answer. I had a anatomy question, that i think i got wrong.

In my opinion part of the science section is designed to test your abilility to recall from past courses of bio that u have taken... and if u r not a bio major u will have trouble. But if u master the other sciences even if your bio score is low dental schools will understand...

I could understand how u feel now. I am a second language learner, and it's super hard for me for RC. I thought I would get 15 when I took it. The RC is scaring and hard. However, u did good on the other section, just focus on eng for following 3 months. U will be "super" next time. Best wishes!

man, how do you think i feel...i only speak english and i still only pulled a 16 on the RC (20 AA; 22 TS). i think i just over analyze all the questions and think, "is it really THAT straight forward?" and so i spend the whole section second guessing my self. so, yea, i'll be there with you studying this summer to take the test again in August.😡

I just took the DAT on June 6, 2008 and I can really say that Kaplan didnt prepare me at all for the PAT and for Bio. Taking the exam was a nightmare because the test was waaaay harder than the practice tests given by Kapan and also harder than topscore. Bio was just impossible and PAT was a nightmare. I have never scored below a 20 on my practice exams but on the real one I totally blew it. I got destroyer, top score, kaplan books and I dont know what Im doing wrong to prepare but I didnt do to well.

Bio 18
Gen chem 20
O chem 23
PAT 18
RC 17
QR 17

Overall test was a lot harder than any practrice exams that I have taken.

I think if u keep up with the studying and get as many qusestions as u can from as many sources as u can and bottom line in head should not be bias toward not learning something, always prepare for the unpredictable. Reffering to cambell would help alot there maybe about 5 chapters that u should schedule your self to read like the embryology one that describes the gastrulation process of the frog compared to bird to mamals there are lots common questions that could be pulled from that chapter alone, but dont be affraid of reading big text book because u now kind of know what to skipp and what could be a potential question. I mean put yourself inthe shoes of the one writing the dat, and be CRUEL. 🙂

u can do it
just dont give up👍

Seeing how your only low score is RC, you might not need to retake it again if you apply to the right schools.

The thing is jigabdo I know when i take it again my sciences will either be higher or just about the same, but the reading I really cant predict that will or will not improve... I will try and I will go crazy on reading, but there can be no garantee that I willl score higher if not lower, depending on luck... If I get the ethics one I think I'd score 12...:corny:

we are going the beat the horse for the second time u and I ... lol :beat:

im not so sure you should say that you did bad on the Reading comprehension because english is your second language, the rest of the exam was in english wasn't it???

🙂 I gues u have a point. That is exactly what my father told me. Thanks for the kind words

DUDE.. you did great... If this is your first time taking the exam then you should be warned that the second time you take it the science section will not be that easy... i had about the same scores as you did in the sciences my first trial but i had got a 16 in PAT so i had to re-take it... the second time around i did great in the PAT.. 22 but my science scores turned out to be lower then my first DAT. You should really call up some dental schools and ask them for advice...

U R right there are probabely many different versions of the tests I have to still keep up with the sciences while readying lots of info on diff subjects and I am definately planning on calling some schools

uggh ethics passage.....
definitely you dont want to encounter that one.
Even though english isnt my native language but my schooling was done in english and speak fluently as well. People are surprised that how come i lived in a third world country for my whole life (came here 4 yrs ago) and speak so fluently.
I was doing good during the first two science passages until i got this non-sci ethics passage😱😱
I really want to meet up this guy who wrote that article on ethics and is ethically wrong to use on the DAT.

Try reading as many scientific articles as you can get your hands on.

I read "Nature" and "The Cell" almost everyday for a few months before taking the DAT. It's going to take a LONG time to read at first, but eventually you will speed up.

I had a question:

Can I take a lower division anatomy class in a JC and make the class credit no credit or in other words pass or fail? Would schools care? I mean I dont need it and I dont care for another 3 or 4 units of A, which does not make a significant difference on my GPA (Not trying to brag at all) I just want to increase my knowledge? I just want to show dental schools that I'm being productive in the summer and refreshing on sciences that I may need to be familar with once I get in.

Any thought????

wait what do you mean if its your second time taking it the sciences are going to be harder, do they like know that you are taking it again so they give you a harder test??? or are you just saying that because he did very well on his science section??

In my opinion and I could be very well wrong that they have diff versions and maybe a version to me is very hard and to someone else very easy so when u say that, it's unclear based on the degree of the knowlege and length of commitment the person put to prepare. But Ya I believe if for example I took version A there is no way they will give me version A agian they may give B C D ... What I was referring to was that I shouldnt just lay back and just read article, improving the reading section even by one point takes monthsss or perhaps longer and it's rather like a habit. Like if write with your right hand and all of the sudden they tell u will be examined with the speed of writing with your left hand and u must write an essay. and u have three months to practice... it's hardddd

but any ways dont panic just keep going.. we all have a long way to run...

Hey! so, I took the DAT on June 2 and got 20/22/18 but with a 17 in reading comp....i was mortified, but I called my top choice school (which happens to be in the top 5 of all dental school, so they are picky) adn they said, if you have really strong sciences they will look at your English class grades, or anything related to that.....so, i think you would be okay if you have good english class grades (which I am sure you do with your high GPA) the only thign to be concernbed about is cut-offs...but, great job!!👍:luck:

i got to NYU with very very similar scores. u did good. good luck !!!!!!!

go luck on ur next exam!!! Reading is also my weakest part...but I am so exhuasted to retake it. Good lick!!!!!!!!!! Fighting👍

Wow you rocked it. Congratulations. Good luck practicing for reading!

You can always try to do different approaches to RC.

You can just skip the passage and go straight to the questions. (My friends who did this ended up with 22s 23s. I don't know how.)

I tend to read every single word, and I try not to go back to the passage for answers. In the long run, if you master this method, I think you can do really well and quickly. Always time yourself. Make sure you only have 17 minutes per passage (for reading and answering). Skip the hard ones and go to the easy ones. Once the 17 minutes is up, go to the next passage, and DO NOT THINK ABOUT THE QUESTIONS from the previous passage while you're reading the new passage.

Practice hard and good luck!

(If you're K, pah ee ting as well. hahah)
