1) what are the toughest questions in RC... i havent studied for this section at all.. is finding tone on the test a difficult one???what is tone exactly???is it the readers mood??

2) do any1 know how many word problems are on the QR??? is there a minimum amount that has to be on there?? or it just depends on your version?

3) how hard should i study for taxonomy??? i plan on studying all the questions from destroyer, and skimming biological diversity chapter from cliff ap bio..in your opinions , would this be suficient???

4) which transition elements dont follow the usual electron configuration, when filling it up?? i think Cu is one, right???

thanks...in advance..(p.s.. i asked this is in dats forum,, but i also got 1 answer)

1. at least for me, tone/inference questions are hardest. i got "piano-ed" during the test.. but don't worry about it too much. it's not too bad. i used the search and destroy method for all my practice RC tests, but that method didn't work TOO well on the real passages.

2. i would have to say 3/4 of my QR questions were word problems. it sucked. but i think it depends on version. you kinda just have to read the problem and know immediately how to start it and solve it. not much time for thinking.

3. alott of the bio questions on my test were taxonomy- related. but i think if you really read cliff ap carefully, you should be ok. i only skimmed through cliff. i did do all the destroyer's bio questions tho, and didn't find it useful at all when it came to the real test.

4. i THINK columns containing copper and chromium are exceptions to electron configuration rules.

good luck

I took the DAT 3 days ago, so I can only speak from personal experience.

1) I found that the majority of questions in RC are factual. The three passages that I got had a length of 12-20 paragraphs, which was much longer than I expected. They were packed with information so the most difficult part for me was taking good enough notes to know where to find things. Tone is the authors mood, for example: pessimistic, optimistic, sarcastic, etc.

2) On my test, i'd say it was about 1/3 word problems, many of them very simple. It might depend on the version.

3) I only got a few questions on basic taxonomy, including some on plants. You'll be fine knowing the kingdoms, Linnaean classification, and the key characteristics of organisms in the kingdom animalia and plantae.

4) I didn't study electron configuration much - good thing I didn't get a question referring to transition elements.

Hope this helps somewhat - Goodluck on test day!

Cu and Cr are the exceptions to the electron configuration rule.
According to the Aufbau Principle, the electrons would fill in the lowest energy orbitals first. By that rule, you would typically fully fill the 4 S orbitals first.

However, Cr will move one of its 4S electron in to the 5th D orbital to maximize the number of half-filled orbitals (Hund's Rule).

In Cu, the electron from the 4S will move over to the D orbitals. It is more stable for the electron configuration because all of the electrons in the 5D orbital will be paired and the one electron in the 4S is "happy" being unpaired.

It really depends on the test that you get. I was lucky and got a really easy test. My RC questions were very straightforward, mostly, find the definition of certain words. I think that fewer than 1/4th of my QR were word problems. I had no taxonomy and no electron configuration questions. If you don't do well, just take it again, you might get an easier test, or a test with topics that you know really well. Think of the DAT as a game of Jeopardy, you will nail some tests and bomb others.

1) the tone of the passage relates to the presence that the author sets...how does the author make the passage feel...
2) there are supposed to be 10 word problems on all dat QR sections....except i just took it on the 9th and i felt like there were a lot more than 10
3) I found the bio section unpredictable....most people say this: "you can study and study and study for bio.....u'll never feel quite ready".....just go in there and u'll do fine....stay confident
4)Transition elements that behave unusually:
Cu, Ag, Au (these 3 are in the same period), Mo, Cr (these 2 are in the same period)
****also....nitrogen acts weird too.....it has a higher first ionization energy than oxygen
