i just scheduled my DAT for oct 21, it says the duration is 5:30... the DAT is over 5 hours?
science=1.5hr
RC=1hr
PAT=1hr
QR=45min
that's only 4hr 15min right?

if i need to reschedule/defer, do i have to pay and how do i go about doing that?
thanks

You have tutorials breaks and surveys. You can reschedule as long as theres 48 hours until the exam. I don't think you shoujld reschedule especially since there's so much time left, otherwise you'll just keep pushing it back. Gotta face it sooner or later. The exam is a LOT easier than you'd think... It's more like a highschool exam than your prototypical college exam. VERY broad, nothing specific.

Is their time to write stuff down on your laminated sheets before the test starts (formulas etc)? Would you do this during the tutorial?

Thanks for the info and you are right, no point of delaying the inevitable.
when are you writing it?

nice nice, why were you still asking questions about carbocation and radical stability?

also, what do you mean surveys and tutorials?

When you sit down to start your test there's a 15 minute tutorial. It basically goes through how to take the exam, ie., move the mouse over the box and click it to make your selection, hit the "next" box to move to the next question, hit the "mark" box to mark this question... etc. etc. If you've done practice tests this should be nothing new. If you don't need the tutorial and you have something you'd like to jot down before you start this is the time to do it. For instance, I used grids to help me with the hole punching section of the PAT. I took about 4-5 minutes to draw 15 grids during the tutorial so I wouldn't have to scramble during the test. If you're good to go then just take a couple deep breathes and use the time to get focused. When you're ready hit "end" and your test begins. Otherwise, at the end of 15 minutes the timer starts for SNS and you're off.

The 1st part of the test is SNS (90 min) followed immediately by PAT (60 min). The timer runs continuously throughout this 2 hrs 30 min. After the timer runs down at the conclusion of the PAT you're allowed an optional 15 minute break. Again, the timer is rolling during this 15 minute break. You can either use this time to grab a snack out of your locker, use the bathroom, and or you can continue at any time by hitting "end". Whether you opt to wait or continue is entirely up to you. But, as soon as you choose either option, you're thrown right into RC (60 min) followed immediately by QR (45 min). After the time runs out for QR your test is over.

When you're finished a post-exam survey will then show up with another timer which allows a maximum of 15 minutes, or however long it takes you to answer the questions. For example, how was the prometric staff?, did your computer operate efficiently? etc, etc. Should take you about 5 minutes tops. Hit "end" when you're finished or wait for the 15 minutes to elapse and your exam scores should pop up with limited delay.

If you add up all these times the test could conceivably take 300 minutes, or 5 hrs. You're guaranteed a 4 hr 15 minute exam to complete all sections, but the other 45 minutes involve the tutorial, break, and survey. How long you take for those is entirely in your hands. Sorry if this post is a little long but I would not want to go into my test without this information and it appears as though you needed a heads up. Good luck.

poster above, thank you so much for the informative post, really appreciate it

No prob bud. Btw, don't even allow yourself an opportunity to reschedule your test. Put it out of your mind and make believe you have 1 shot to knock it outta the park. You set the date and now you have something to shoot for. Get pumped up about studying and preparing each and every day during these last few weeks then go in there ready to own it! 3 weeks is a lifetime. I'm sure many SDNers would agree their test prep all came together during this critical time frame. Do it.

My test in Nov 1st and I was going to take one day off a week, do you think this is a good idea to give the brain a rest so you don't get burnt out or would everyday be better?

Also what do you think is a good max for hours to study a day? I've been doing two 3hr segments for a total of 6/day.

One day off is good. You don't need to study 24/7 to do well. You just need to know the big picture. It sounds weird and is kinda hard to explain, but after you take it you'll understand.
