Hi Guys,

I've been studying but I feel like I'm going to bomb the DAT in 2 days. I'm pretty sure I'm gonna retake it which isn't a big deal because I feel like with a few months of extra time I can do really well. I was kinda stupid and registered for the 6 months of eligibility thinking I'd be able to prepare in time and my 6 months are about to expire, so I decided to register for a day even though Im not ready. I was a lot busier with classes and work than I thought I'd be. I know its not a big deal to retake the DAT, but I guess I was feeling pretty confident when I was signing up in the summer and I said to send my scores to every Dental School to save money for when I needed to send my scores. My only question is, will it look bad if I get a really bad DAT score (like a 15) and then retake it and get a 20+ or would it not be a big deal since I improved my score? Thanks for any feedback

Thanks for the reply, but I cant postpone because my 6 month of eligibility will expire in a few weeks during my finals. Im just wondering if it will look too bad if I get a bad DAT score now and improve it in a few months since the scores would be sent to all of the Dental schools.

Can't give you an answer on that, I'll just say it won't look good. I know it's a lot of money to lose but if you score like crap, you lose that money anyway and then you have to go through it again.

Schools will see all your DAT scores, I think it is ill advised to take the DAT if you are not ready, better to just cancel the test and lose the money than take the test and blow it. It's a long hard test and not a test you want to take more than once if it can be avoided.

Hope that helps, just my 2 cents.

I dont mind spending the time. I think going through the process and seeing the real DAT and feeling the real DAT experience would help me for when I'm better prepared. I hate that I spent the money, but I'd rather spend the time taking it than not take it at all unless it looks really bad to the Dental Schools I apply to. I think I would do well on the PAT, QR, and RC, but Im worried about the sciences. I dont think I'd get a 15 overall, but maybe a 15 in Bio or Organic Chemistry with around an 18 on GC and 20's on PAT, RC, and QR based on Practice tests. Im just worried that if I do badly and Dental Schools get the scores that it might really hurt my chances even if I do better later.

I understand your hesitation towards canceling it but look at it this way, it is obviously better to score a 21 in one go then to score 17 and then a 21 right? You would end up saving money when applying to D schools since you have a better chance of getting with a 21 on the first attempt then a 21 on a second attempt.

Great advice WF!

It was a really hard decision, but I decided you guys are right and that if I have to spend the money anyway, I might as well just cancel. I don't like it, but at the same time I feel like a huge burden has been lifted from me and I can study for both school and the DAT with a lot less pressure. Thank you both!

I am happy you were able to make a decision and like you stated "a huge burden lifted" and move forward focusing on your school work, it's just as important to keep a high GPA and scoring high on the DAT.

Wish you the very best on your upcoming school exams and in your preparation for the DAT.....nancy

If you didn't study AT ALL , I would cancel it. That means you'll lose the $375 or however much it is now..
