Not true. I went to the UF interview without a DAT. A number of schools will grant you an interview before you take the DAT

....that is ONLY if you have a very competitive GPA...above that dental school's standards and decent LORs and applicant essay.

I agree it is rare, none of the TX schools would grant me an interview until my LORs were in, let alone my DAT scores. Which, along with my app got there ahead of my LORs so, I was freaking out for a few weeks until my predental advisor(useless) finally got off his ass and mailed them.(sorry still a little bitter about that)
