Well people always ask me this question and I really don't have a definite answer, because I don't know why I didn't get in last year. My GPA is quite high (3.84 last year). I have speculated about some stuff, but I'm not sure if these are the reasons why I got rejected from most schools I applied to last year (9 total):
1-Took the DAT on July 27th...That in turn gave me a late interview...and that's why I got waitlisted. When I went to interview at UCSF on Dec 5th, they told us that 60% of the class was already full and they already had 35 people waitlisted by then. Why I didn't make it in the remaining 40% I have no idea. UCLA gave it to me flat out. They invited me to interview for their alternate list, measning that their class was full by the time they interviewed me in April.
2-Most of the blame is on me for not doing enough research and applying to schools that take none or very few out of state applicants.
3-AA19 TS20 PA19 may look like impressive scores at the first sight, but don't forget the importance of individual scores. My individual science scores were Bio 21, G-chem 19, O-chem 18. Having only one sciences score above 20 isn't that impressive specially when you're applying to competitive schools like UCLA, UCSF, and UoP. Besides, my RC score was somewhat low for someone, who is not a native english speaker (18). So, that screwed me too. PA score of 19 is somewhat average too.
4-I did the first two years of my college at CC and then transfered to UCLA. Some schools like UNLV look down on that, specially if you're an out of state applicant. So, when I called them to find out why they rejected me they gave me two reasons:
-Apply earlier next year.
-Complete more units at UCLA.
The fact that I even got interviews at schools such as UCLA and UCSF shows that my stats weren't that bad, and my application only needed minor improvements in terms of timing. Most my friends told me to apply with the same scores for 2010, and perhaps I could have gotten in this year with the same scores. However, I knew I could do better and I didn't want to take any chances, so I retook the exam, and I'm glad I did.
Hope this answers your question🙂
