Hey guys I was going over some practice problems for gen chem and for somer reason I cannot get oneof the answers.

1. The electron configuration of a particular neutral atom is (1s2)(2s2)(2p6)(3s2)(3p2) What is the number of unpaired electrons in this atom?
A.1
B.2 <--what I put
C.3 <--correct answer
D.4
E.0

From the configuration i get that it is Si. I said B because I was like 100 percent sure it was 2 because the electrons occupy different orbitals. The answer key says C. I thought there was a mistake in the key but these questions are from ADA so I thought its probably not a typo. Am I missing something?

Thank You!

The answer should be 2. Make sure the question doesn't read 3p3 and also make sure that you are not looking at the wrong answer in the answer key.

you're right. the answer key is wrong.

ADA made a mistake in the answer key. Wouldn't it be funny if there were mistakes on the real test answer key!

Hahah
Thanks guys.
