Well this was my first time to take the DAT.

AA 17
TS 17
Bio 18
Gchem 17
Ochem 15
Reading 20
QR 14
PAT 17

Overall GPA: 3.69
Science GPA: 3.45
EC: Above average including clubs, medical volunteering....etc
Shadowing: 60+ hrs
Research: one paper and one on the way

Do I have ANY chance getting into any school. I am 27 years old and have been working in the biological research field since I was 21. Where should I apply out of state???

Thanks in advance
Jason

It may be wise to retake the DAT. The 15 in orgo and 14 in QR are a bit low and need to be brought up.

you've got a shot at getting in i'm sure, but if you were to improve that DAT, you'd have a much higher chance.

What public and private schools do I have a chance to get into???
Could we start a list??

I'll start...

1)BU
2)NYU

just go for that extra mile and retake your DAT to have a better chance

6) Your state school(s)

Why would you automatically say those schools not knowing anything about the applicant. I'd stick to asking questions if you're going to just throw advice like that around.

This might explain (http://dentalstats.tripod.com/03-04.htm) why he is saying that?

To take it. Just play it on the safe side

For Meharry and Howard, you need to be a minority to have a chance of getting in. Thats what CJWolf is referring to. If the OP is white, then there is no point in telling him to apply to those schools.

Thanks for the clarification.

Yes, I am a white male. So the consensus is to retake the DAT??? What should the breakdown be in each subject??? Do I even try to apply this year for 2006???

shoot for at least 18-19s in all subjects.

and you have time to apply this year still. you can actually take the test twice if you are almost ready for it (but i wouldnt' recommend it - june and then september).

anywyas i would take it in august.

I agree. Those low scores, and one being a pre-req, might scare some schools off. I encourage you to apply, and throw in some 'reach' schools into your mix, and retake the DAT which you have plenty of time to do. Best of luck! 👍

For sure OChem needs to be brought up a few points, which will raise both AA and TS scores. If you can bring up GChem to at least a 19 or so, then it will compensate for a low QR, b/c it shows that you really can do math, and that QR on the DAT is just a pain! 🙄 Both of your GPAs are almost exactly like the ones I applied with, and my QR score was pretty sub-par as well....but that was really my only low score. Every school I interviewed at basically told me that they put very little emphasis on the QR, as long as everything else is ok.

And also, even though 18 is a relatively decent score for Bio, if you can pull that up to a 20 or so, it'll do wonders, since the first couple years of dental school are almost all Bio. A strong bio score will compensate for other areas of weakness on the DAT. Good job on the RC...I've heard that a lot of emphasis is placed on that score. 👍

Good luck! :luck: 🙂

You have pretty strong GPAs, so retaking and raising your DAT scores will give much more options later on. I recommend retaking your DAT as well.

I had higher GPA than most averages, but working+research+no money, left little time to study for the DAT. Thus, I had a 15QR, 20 ochem/chem/reading, and 18AA.

I have applied to several schools and ironically the "lesser" schools were the ones least interested. I had also had a couple publications and medical missions, and in my case I received acceptances from schools which did research. School that consider themselves good "clinical schools," (ie. low board schools) were not interested.

Good luck!
