DAT score or GPA
Started by giozz21
Im no seasoned vet like the majority of people here... But from what i have got from these boards, if you have an average GPA, an above average DAT seems fine. If u have a low GPA, a high DAT is needed. If you have a super high GPA, like 3.8 or greater, then an average DAT will be sufficientgiozz21 said:hey does anyone think the DAT score ways more than the GPA in most dental school's decisions to accept applicants?????

Certain schools weigh the DAT more than GPA and some schools like higher GPAs. Off the top of my head, I know that UOP traditionally places more emphasis on great DAT scores and are generally more forgiving of lower GPAs. The best place to see which schools care about what, check out predents.com and look at the schools you're interested in to see what they want.

I am a first year at NYU. My gpa was so so and so was my dat, but I would consider myself much better off that many of the kids who have a better gpa and dats and who got accepted into a few schools. I understand that schools look at that, but it's really not that great of a potential meter. I know its a little off topic, but just thought I'll let you know.

that would really help.. u can also add to your profile by doing more community service, shadowing, and research. adcoms realize that we are human being and we make mistakes.. and upward trend on ur gpa helps as well
yeah i intended to do that because the main reason for my low GPA is the fact that i sucked bad at chemistry all my college life and i spent thousands of dollars and time on private tutoring, study groups, extra help books, i also got a chemistry for dummies type of book... the thing is i've always gotten A's in any biology courses i've taken so far and i've got another year of just biology courses to take, and if my trend of getting A's in them stays the same i shouldnt be too far off GPA wise....
but i do understand its a very competitive field and having a stellar DAT score will boost my credentials and as you said having extras like shadowing a dentist and community work and such, plus i think the fact that i've lived all around the world, schooled in a foreign system, know 3 languages, and i'm biracial might set me aside from other candidates... i just dont want this GPA problem putting a dent in my master plan to become a dentist and conquering the world one patient at a time
please if anyone as any more advise please post, i'm really grateful and anything will help,i'm just getting real scared right now just because its reaching that time....

Just had one of the most difficult tests EVER on acid/bases. Fingers and toes are crossed but we'll see how I did on tuesday.

Well, getting accepted to dental school is kind of like getting accepted to a university right out of high school. You take the SAT/ACT for college and DAT for dental school. So i bet you can get in dental school if you have low gpa and high DAT.
