Hi guys,
So I am planning on taking the DAT sophomore summer after reading a bunch of these posts. However, after my sophomore year the only science courses I would have taken would be gen chem I & II, gen bio I & II, and ochem I & II. I heard taking classes like physiology, genetics, and microbiology could make a difference. Should I wait to take it junior summer after taking these additional courses or still take it sophomore summer and just try to learn using DAT prep material?

The other classes only help a little. If you can take it sophomore summer, then do it. If you plan on trying to matriculate straight from college to dental school, it makes the process a lot easier since you're not applying at the same time as you're taking the DAT.

Would you not be able to take genetics over the next year? I think that's a pretty standard course to take sophomore year and would definitely be helpful.

I'm taking the DAT between sophomore and junior years. I did have genetics though but not micro yet.

Thanks everyone! I mean I probably could take one of those classes in the spring. Out of the three (genetics, physiology, & microbiology) which is the most helpful?

im planning on taking the dat in august as a sophmore going to junior year and all my peers envy me because I know all of orgo and bio prior to studying. It really does help a ton

1. Genetics
2. A&P
3. Micro

They would all be very beneficial to take it you can, but prioritize in that order.

What other science classes have you taken so far?

i took my DAT's my sophomore summer and the classes i took by then were bio1&2, chem1&2, orgo1&2, physics1, and ecology. I felt completely prepared for the science sections with those courses under my belt with the help of my kaplan study materials

For what it's worth, I took the DAT without having taken any of those. It's definitely doable. Take it after sophomore year, use DAT prep materials, and thank yourself later

chem 1,2 orgo 1,2 bio 1,2. With orgo 2 and bio 2 (cell bio) completed just this past semester. the destroyer is key to success, running through destroyer orgo twice after taking orgo 2 makes you feel like you wont miss a question on the real thing. Aiming for that 30 on orgo

Definitely take it then. It'll give you enough time to master some the material you'll learn in those upper level classes. Plus when you take those upper level classes you'll have a hand up

I also took it after my sophomore year, but I had taken anatomy before and self-studied genetics. Both were necessary for the test.

Or take it in the spring of junior year, right before cycle opens, and take a lighter class load during that spring.
