Hey guys, i was wondering what the general consensus is regarding data plans for osteopathic med school, and if people feel that it's a good thing to have. Many people I've talked to have said that it's nice to have a data plan to access programs, patient files, etc in med school, others say its not needed, what's the general feelign about it?

For medical related use or not, if you can afford it, I think it's a nice thing to have for school/life.

I think they meant it is useful for your 3rd and 4th years of medical school. Your first 2 years - you don't really need it at all. I guess you could check your e-mail and what not where ever you are; but most of the time you will have a laptop with you and your school will have wireless anyway - maybe then just getting a phone with wifi capability is more than enough for your first 2 years; either way internet on the phone is not a must/needed for the first 2 years.

use whatever you have now for the first two years. and then get an iphone (or the new google phone....it's gonna be cool....).

you don't need anything more sophisticated than textbooks for your preclinical years. save yourself the money while you can.

Seems pretty pointless when so many places have wifi these days. Are you really expecting e-mails so important that you need to download them instantly no matter where you are?

Not much use during 1st two years, unless you have the money and just want the convenience.

Definitely helpful/convenient 3rd/4th years. Granted, most hospitals have some sort of free wifi, but a private doc's office/clinic probably won't, and I still study at random places that have either incredibly slow or unreliable wifi that makes it pretty much useless.

I got the iPhone when 3rd year started and I've found that I rarely use my laptop anymore for general web/email usage. I've found the builtin browser good enough to use those times when I need to look something up real quick.

thanks for all the input guys, ill probably get a wifi phone on my sprint account at some point soon, i like the idea of gps but i might as well get a stand alone one

I got an iphone earlier this semester, and I love it to death. I use it constantly for both school and regular life. I was a skeptic before getting it, but am now a believer. It is nice to always have access to your school and regular email + internet. It has some cool medical apps, most more applicable for the clinical years but there are things like netters flash cards on it etc that are useful now. You want to of course consider your personal budget and inclination to use technology, but it is a great 'extra' to have. BTW NSU has a deal with att called a fan account, where you show them your nova id, and you get 15% off the voice and data plan rates every month, which is pretty sweet. Works for existing att customers too.
