Hey guys!

Happy August. Hope you are all doing well. I have a question about deposits and how the system works. Let's say I get an acceptance to a school after one of my upcoming interviews. I have saved up a lot of money after calculating the costs of all possible deposits. After I place a deposit to save my seat, do I have up until next spring to make a decision? Or is it dependent on the school? I don't want to rush to make any decisions prematurely. This is my first cycle applying so sorry if this is a dumb question!

Applicants will be asked to submit necessary matriculation documents, including a deposit, according to the following AACOMAS traffic guideline schedule:
  • Those accepted prior to November 15 will have until December 14.
  • Those accepted between November 15 and January 14 will have 30 days.
  • Those accepted between January 15 and April 30 will have 14 days.
  • Those accepted on or after May 1 may be asked for an immediate deposit.
  • After May 1 of the year of matriculation, each medical college may implement college-specific procedures for accepted students who hold one or more seats at other medical colleges.

I see, so the deposits are due at those times to hold your seats, but do you have time to make your decision all the way up until April-May in the spring

Oh wait, I reread your message saying “After May 1st…” Does that mean I have until then to make a decision if I hold multiple seats? Or are timelines different for each school after you put a deposit down?

I was able to do more research on this.

After May 15, you can only hold one DO acceptance, but you’re still allowed to remain on MD and DO waitlists. Most DO schools then set a final “commit to enroll” deadline in late June or July, at which point you must formally commit to that school and withdraw from all other waitlists. If you receive an MD acceptance before that commitment deadline, you can drop your DO seat (losing your deposit) and take the MD spot without issue.”
