1st Question
The 2nd law of thermodynamics says that:
  • At absolute zero a perfect crystal will be formed
  • Energy cannot be created nor destroyed
  • Your Answer
    All reactions are accompanied by an increase in randomness (entropy)
  • Correct Answer
    The entropy of an isolated system will never decrease
  • Energy can be transformed from one form to another
An individual reaction as it is written can show a decrease in entropy but all of such reactions would be accompanied by an increase in entropy by increasing the entropy of the surroundings.

2nd Question
Which of the following quantum numbers denotes a Selenium atom?
  • n=4, l=1, ml=1, ms=-1/2
  • Your Answer
    n=4, l=1, ml=-1, ms=1/2
  • n=4, l=1, ml=0, ms=-1/2
  • n=4, l=1, ml=1, ms=1/2
  • Correct Answer
    All of the above
My answer (n=4, l=1, ml=-1, ms=-1/2) wasn't listed so I just chose randomly. Am I missing something here? How are the first and third answers correct? How can you put an electron in the third p-orbital that is spin down without violating Hund's rule or Aufbau principle for selenium (4 valence e-)? It seems like none of those choices denotes a selenium atom.. the first would be Kr, second would be Ga, third would be Br, fourth would be As...
