Um, Lets just say I didn't do so well on my MCAT August 2003-- not dredful, but not competitive at all. I mailed my applications before I got my score, and to my amazement, I got 3 interviews with that score-- 2 waitlists advised me to retake it in April 2004. So I did-- knowing I wasn't ready I did. Neddless to say I did WORSE! So giving up on the Class of 2008 and looking towards being in the Class of 2009, I took a really good (and well paying) job as a chemist for a major company.

But fate is cruel. I got accepted to the third school I interviewed at a week after I started my new job. But they want me to start a program within a month of acceptance. Everything flooded to my mind-- my dream was being blocked by not being able to afford the move at that time and the job that could help me pay for it all-- But Not Yet! The cost of the school could be covered by loans, but the cost of living in the area near the school is outrageous. So unprepared, I reluctantly turned it down for this year.

I didn't think of how hard it was going back into the giant pool of people wanting to be doctors. Re-applying, Re-taking the MCAT... AND THE REgrets!!

The point of all this is just to vent and let everyone know that Dreams don't always come easy even when they are close to coming true. Just prepare yourself as best you can and SAVE SAVE SAVE! College can drain us, but try to store scraps away because loans can't pay for everything. Never give up! Class of 2009 whoohoo!

Uh, why couldn't you use loans?

That is what I was going to ask.

They wouldn't kick in in time, they wanted me to start in June (and gave me like 2 1/2 weeks notice)-- school didn't start till August and I had no family in that state I could stay with, so I would be SOL and no rent money= homelessness. So unfortunately....

Every school of higher education I know of lets there students take out emergency loans which normally don't have any interest applied for 90 days. This allows you to register, get money to live on, buy books ect., until your federal student loans come in.

Not sure I follow your line of thinking here...best of luck, though and I hope it all works out in the end.

wow!! that was a brave thing you did, turning down the acceptance. I wish you all of the luck in this next process. just for the simple fact that you turned it down while unprepared says to me that you are very mature. some others may not have been so mature and taken the acceptance anyway possibly putting their family in hardship by moving w/o any notice whatsoever, all accolades to you!!!! 👍

Ditto

It wasn't meant to be at this moment. Good luck next time around.

i take it that deferring a year wasn't an option? you should at the very least explain your situation and reasoning for your decision to the dean or some one at the adcom of the school you got into so they know whats up and they know to look for you again. letting them know that you declined admission strictly for financial reasons and not for any other reason might help. right now, you can't live with regrets, if you got in once, you can do it again. so don't sweat it.

You obviously took it forgranted for getting accepted to a medical school and w/o thinking, declined the offer. Now you have realized the reprucussions of declining a seat for medical school. There's nothing you can do about it now. You did it once, you can do it again. I know it's a big hassle, but you shouldn't live life by regrets. Learn from this mistake and think of other options next time.

It is very easy to criticize and judge when you have never gone through an experience. I would never take for granted any opportunity especially one so important to me. I hope this post helps someone out there who may face a situation like this. In this economy money or lack there of is a real issue-- especially when there is no one to lean on or help you out. Just Plan ahead. I thought the decision to go to medical school wasn't a decision at all, if you get a YES-- then pack your bags and leave everything. But once I faced the situation of quitting a job just to study full time for the MCAT, using up your savings to cover you during that time, being a recent college grad with loan officers hounding you, not to mention family obligations-- its just not so cut and dry. I know there are people who have gone or will go through this type of situation, and I hope my experience can help someone else.
