DC area programs

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
i can only comment on INOVA which I interviewed at and really liked. It is a community program with a lot of good exposure and some really interesting faculty. I ranked it low only because I decided I didn't really want to live in DC, but I liked the program. What specific things are you wanting to know?

I only interviewed at Georgetown, not my home school and no aways. This was my perception from 2 days only. I actually didn't rank it.

1. The Chairman basically stated first off they were not there to train general surgeons. If we were looking for that, he said it may not be the place for you. More academic with basically required research years.
2. Not a level one, depends on your interests if that is good or bad.
3. Great for transplants, they do small bowel.
4. I thought the residents were great, like most places.
5. Pulmonary attendings staff the ICU's, not trauma/cc surgeons.
6. DC is a cool city, but the area is very expensive, esp. near the hospital.
7. Seemed like their residents placed well.

I didn't like the ICU and trauma situation. Plus, I am not sure about future career goals, so I didn't like #1. I also wanted to buy a place with a yard, and Georgetown is not really the ideal place to do that on a resident salary. More of the social/housing situation played into the fact that I did not rank it.

One of my co-researchers in the lab here is a gen surg resident at GW. He speaks very, very highly of the program and has been very happy there. 4 chiefs a year, so on the small side, but a good mix of academic opportunities and operative experience. If you have any specific questions I'd be happy to ask him.
