DDS can do procedures that require cutting down tooth structures such as filling, root canals or extractions. DMD (Doctor of Medicine) can ONLY perscribe medications and advising patients. They are not legally authorized to do any kind of surgical procedures. DP

Before posting anything I suggest you read the "FAQ" thread here on SDN Dental.

Couldn't have said it better myself... ;)

Back when dentistry was started (1900 or so) there were two types of dentists- those who would see the public (D.D.S.) and those that would only serve royalty and presidents (D.M.D.) The D.D.S group was so bad at what they did- they were forced to partner with cosmotologists in order to make a living. It was this relationship that matured and grew so fast that eventually the cosmotology schools and D.D.S. schools formed a partnership in education. Thereby forming the 3 nights a week for 10 weeks course in dental surgery practice we now see in the market today.
The D.M.D. program from the begining was regarded as the best in the world. They would eat and dine with the celebrities and the whose who of the day. Not only did these dentists have the well renowned M.D. in there degree but also had and extra "D" giving them the highest regard in not only there circle of friends but in society. Everyone that had a D.M.D. was held so high it was almost as if they were Gods- bringing healing and good fortune to all they were in contact with.
So the takaway lesson is dont be fooled by what you have read- the differences are immense- if you ever want to be someone and be worth two farts- be a D.M.D. and leave the D.D.S. correspondence classes to those that hold GEDs
