DDS or DMD: Do you have a preference?

I know DDS and DMD degrees are equal once you become a dentist, but what about your personal preferences? Most California schools give out DDS and most dentists here have one, but I heard something from a UCLA professor that DMD is the future and that most schools may start converting over.

I personally was looking for a school with a DDS if I could but now I kind of am leaning towards a DMD now. My top choice schools give out a DDS however and I obviously would choose those first, but if I had to choose between two schools that I couldn't decide between I may go with the one with the degree I prefer. I know that sounds silly but hey just sharing with you how I feel 🙂
 
DDS or DMD?....MD or DO?.... I really do not think that it matters much. In each case, you are practicing medicine and that is the ultimate goal. I personally would not limit my school choices on the basis of a few different letters after my name. I do not think that your patients know the difference or even care that much as long as you are certified and competent.

Yeah MD is not the same as DO they are significantly different.

DDS and DMD are the same as we all know,

I would be no means choose a school over it even at the smallest level.
However if all schools gave out DMD or DDS at graduation I might prefer DMD
 
isn't it fancy for being called as DMD than as DDS?
I think so and would want to be called as DMD

i personally would want DDS more than DMD since most of people recognize DDS with dentists and there are way more dentists practicing with DDS on their name than with DMD. if i have DDS on my name and someone comes to me for associate position, i would pick DDS guy over DMD if they both have equal qualities


btw DO and MD are totally different (different education and some hospitals would only let MD practice there and etc.)

I don't get why you would pick one over the other... DMD is the same as DDS as all of us already know... although I would love to know the history behind why some schools opted to give out DMDs over DDSs. Either way, the standard of education and level of competence is the same for both DMD and DDS alike.

oh i definately do not care which degree it comes with.
(i applied to temple 😉 as well as many DDS schools)

but it seems like everyone that brings up this topic does it because they like to have some kind of MD in their names, and they want to be cool with DMD (which kinda bothers me since i feel like some of pre-dents over here are acting like pre-med back ups) so i kinda threw that in there to say that I want DDS since it's usually associated with dentist degree

but yeah i truthfully do not care which degree as long as i become the dentist

Why would it closed down? I understand they are the same, but people have opinions and preferences. I'm just curious what they are...no harm in that right?
 
All I want to do is practice dentistry, wheather it needed multiple degrees or none, I'd pursue that route.
 
It doesn't matter to me, but if I received a DDS my name would be kind of funny.

oh ok, I got you... that I agree with - there are many people who just want that "MD" portion after their name which I think is foolish as well. DDS or DMD... whatever the school offers is enough for me - I'll happy to just be a dentist.

Love my DMD degree. I don't know why but I have had lots of new patients come to my office because of my DMD initial. Oh yeah, and my office is in a very competitive area and not that many DMDs around.
 
I don't know but i personally prefer DDS only for the matter that it is more recognized as a Dentist. I don't care which one i receive but i also like how DDS sounds over DMD...lol!

But i would also love to know why some schools give out DDS while others DMD.
 
DDS is much better for me!

I want to practice in my state (New York) where most people only recognize DDS and not DMD. DDS=Dentist for most people in NY. But i know in places like Boston it might be better to have DMD bc Tufts and BU both give DMD. But in NY, all 4 schools give DDS so its definitely better for business IMO.

Exactly why i want DDS lol!

I did find something interesting which everyone may want to read. This article basically explains how DMD came out. The original degree is the DDS and DMD came out when Harvard decided to open up a Dental School, and basically thought they were better then everyone and like yeah why not make our own degree for it. :laugh: Well not exactly like that but that's the sum of it all.

I dont think having a DDS or DMD would change a practice in the slightest, most people dont know anything about it, or even which there Dentist is.
 
to me,
being a dentist is basically doing hard tissue surgery all day. with that in mind, I like the DDS over DMD.

I disagree... it's right there on the window, business cards, and even the giant block letters above most practices. I have even heard educated people (like my PI in my research lab) talk about how their dentist has a DMD instead of a DDS so that means they are licensed to practice medicine and dentistry and feel much safer with them as their dentist. Imagine the look on her face when I told her otherwise....

With all that said... I'd go for the DMD.

I actually really don't have a preference. I think it would be interesting to collect a survey from the general public, asking them these questions:
"1)Would you rather go to a dentist with a DMD or a dentist with a DDS?
2)What is the difference between a dentist who has a DMD and one who has a DDS?
3)Does a DDS vs. a DMD make any difference to you at all?"

Compare the results by geographic location. If there is a statistically significant preference toward dentists with one degree over the other, it may be more marketable to go to a school that offers that degree. Most likely there isn't a difference and most people don't even care.

Since I'm not very creative, I'm guessing a study like this has already been done. Anyone have a link to the results?
