DDS vs. DMD

I'm somewhat confused of the exact differences. I know DDS is a doctor of dental surgery, etc. And Both can ultimately become oral surgeons. So what's the big difference.. I read some where that it delt with Harvard latinizing (verb?) it, so it was DMD...?
