Hi I'm going to start working as an anesthesiology attending in 5 weeks and I just submitted my application for a DEA number? I'm nervous that I'm not going to get the DEA # on time for all those paperwork. Can we start working as attg without a DEA #? We don't have to write prescriptions, but then again, we deal with controlled substances everyday... thx!

Your DEA number, since you wont be writting scripts, is a matter of hospital credentialing. They may not let you start seeing patients until your package is complete. It took mine ~3mo to come back.

I think you need a dea to adminster at a minimum fent/ vsd since you are essentially 'prescribing' it. I think my dea took less than a week (was a while ago, but i recall it was fast). good luck.
