Hi,

Just trying to figure out if I can transfer a DEA number across states. Got it in California, and am now in Texas. Haven't found a place to practice here yet, so I haven't submitted a change of address, but it should be that simple, just have the addresses changed to Texas and keep the same old number, right? Also, I guess after I transfer it, I need a DPS number cause Texas requires that. Have I missed anything. Do I get my DPS number from Texas before I get my DEA license address changed? Does it matter the order.

State license -> DPS number then DEA change of address.
You will be asked to fax a copies of the first two to local (for TX) DEA office

I believe you will get a new # and cannot transfer out of state. Each address is associated with your number and you are required to get a new # if you change locations even within the same state (especially if the first location is not shutting down and you are just leaving). I know this is what happened in MA where I practice. You definitely need your state's license and controlled substances registration first. I have called the DEA offices before and they are very friendly and helpful.

if the number is associated with you name you do NOT need to change it. It keeps following me for the third time. First practice, second practice and residency now. All in different states.
If the number is associated with a practice you are working at the moment then yes, it will change.
