Does anyone know if you need an additional state DEA license if you only prescribe controlled medications at a VA Hospital in that state?

Or how one would find out?

Some states have a state issued pharmacy license of their own physicians have to get to prescribe controlled substances.

By additional - I mean that I have a DEA license registered in a different state than where the VA is located.

As long as you do not prescribe medications outside the VA you dont need a state specific number, like the DPS registration Texas used to require. If your patients want to fill their medications at Walgreens or other non VA pharmacy you will probably need the state required number. If you don't have it the pharmacy will treat your prescriptions like an out of state prescription and may fill prescriptions short term but not routinely. This is how it worked for me.
