Hi I am currently applying to a handful of PT schools in the southeast for the 2013 term and am wondering what the general deadline is to commit once you find out you've been accepted. Do you have to put a deposit down right away, or will you get some time to decide if you're waiting to hear back from multiple schools? For example, if you find out in February for a summer term, do you have to decide right away or do you get some time? And for a Fall term, if you find out in February or so, do you get time to decide as well? Thank you!

It depends on the school. Usually you have between 1 and 4 weeks to send in a deposit. It is pretty common for people to ask for extensions and get them so that they can wait to hear back from other schools.

A lot of people get a deposit in somewhere and then wait to hear back from their top choice or get off a waitlist at their top choice. This option involves you eating the $500 deposit you put in but it also ensures you will be going somewhere in the fall.

This is my experience (hope it helps):

I applied last cycle, and I think all the schools gave me a month to put a deposit down. The earliest acceptance I got was in the beginning of December and the latest was the middle of February. The earliest program started in July and the latest started in September. Two of the schools gave me an extension because I hadn't seen the school (due to lack of required interview). I heard a couple people say they didn't have as much success getting extensions with schools that did interview.

Most people put a deposit down on the first school that they get accepted to, but like the above person said, usually the school doesn't give you that deposit back if you decide to go to another program. These deposits range from $250-$1000 (usually $500).

I was given 2 weeks, put the money down to hold my spot just in case I didn't get in anywhere else. Good thing,,,,,,,,no other offers. My school returns 90% of the deposit if presented w/ a written request by the first day of class. So it was well worth the risk ($1000) plus if I got into the state school I would have saved a whole lot more and would gladly have eaten the entire deposit 🙂-waitlisted at 3.
