Hey everyone,
I just had a phone conversation with a dean from a DO school who made a pretty blunt statement. He said it’s impossible to get accepted into any MD or DO school with an undergraduate GPA below 3.45.
For context, I’m currently in a SMP with a 3.6 GPA & 508 MCAT. I’ve got strong clinical, research, and volunteer experiences, and I was planning on applying this cycle. My undergrad GPA was 3.1 (hence the SMP), so I was surprised to hear this after seeing posts on here saying otherwise.
I’ve gotten A’s in two semesters of graduate-level biochemistry, among other upper-level biomedical science courses. Despite that, the dean flat-out told me that master’s GPAs “don’t matter”, regardless of rigor or course content and said my A’s in grad biochem were essentially worthless. Instead, he told me I’d need to go back and retake my undergrad biochem C at another undergraduate institution. That just doesn’t make sense to me. He literally suggested I take 2 more years of undergrad course work to try and meet the 3.45 uGPA cutoff.
What added more confusion was that he then pitched the school’s “guaranteed linkage” post-bac program, which guarantees a med school seat if you meet the program’s benchmarks. I can’t help but think was he trying to scare me into applying to that program? If so, why? He then suggested Caribbean and said neurosurgeons went there... ok
Is this something others have heard from adcoms or deans? Was he exaggerating to make a point, or is this a reality I just need to accept? Would love to hear from anyone who got in with stats below that threshold or who was told something similar.
@Goro Plz tell me you've heard of students getting accepted with a uGPA around 3.1 after they reinvented themselves with a SMP. Idc about my specific chances, but is it really "impossible" like he says? Even lowest tier DO?
Thanks in advance and good luck to everyone applying this cycle.
