Hey everyone,

I just had a phone conversation with a dean from a DO school who made a pretty blunt statement. He said it’s impossible to get accepted into any MD or DO school with an undergraduate GPA below 3.45.

For context, I’m currently in a SMP with a 3.6 GPA & 508 MCAT. I’ve got strong clinical, research, and volunteer experiences, and I was planning on applying this cycle. My undergrad GPA was 3.1 (hence the SMP), so I was surprised to hear this after seeing posts on here saying otherwise.

I’ve gotten A’s in two semesters of graduate-level biochemistry, among other upper-level biomedical science courses. Despite that, the dean flat-out told me that master’s GPAs “don’t matter”, regardless of rigor or course content and said my A’s in grad biochem were essentially worthless. Instead, he told me I’d need to go back and retake my undergrad biochem C at another undergraduate institution. That just doesn’t make sense to me. He literally suggested I take 2 more years of undergrad course work to try and meet the 3.45 uGPA cutoff.

What added more confusion was that he then pitched the school’s “guaranteed linkage” post-bac program, which guarantees a med school seat if you meet the program’s benchmarks. I can’t help but think was he trying to scare me into applying to that program? If so, why? He then suggested Caribbean and said neurosurgeons went there... ok

Is this something others have heard from adcoms or deans? Was he exaggerating to make a point, or is this a reality I just need to accept? Would love to hear from anyone who got in with stats below that threshold or who was told something similar.

@Goro Plz tell me you've heard of students getting accepted with a uGPA around 3.1 after they reinvented themselves with a SMP. Idc about my specific chances, but is it really "impossible" like he says? Even lowest tier DO?

Thanks in advance and good luck to everyone applying this cycle.

People have gotten into some really great MD schools, like Columbia, case, Duke, Vanderbilt, UCSF after acing a special Masters program and having a great MCAT score.
Exactly my reason for this post. I was like "are people on here making fake accounts of acceptances to get my hopes up?" lol. Thank you for your reply, this is reassuring.

Undergrad GPA was 3.29 and postbacc GPA was 4.0

Not sure how they view each gpa but I think your gpa is better than what mine was.

I’m wary of people promoting programs with linkages by instilling fear and doubt. I would try to talk to an impartial counselors and advisor.

Best of luck!
I will definitely do that. Glad to hear there's a chance. Thank you for your reply.

Are you sure the word was "impossible" and not...

That's what reddit is for. 🙂

Are you sure it was “the Dean” and not a Dean? Some asst or associate deans are out of touch with reality too. You can easily google minimum requirements at many DO schools that disagree with that Dean.

Let's look at the data:

for MD schools there are literally thousands of applicants who are admitted with an undergraduate GPA less than what was quoted to you.

People can exaggerate online but AAMC has the facts.

After looking online, it was an “executive dean”. But honestly I just figured someone in that position should know the requirement for admission… guess not.

Only quickly read your post but just wanted to say I have v similar stats as you and am currently sitting on 4 MD As and 1 DO A (after deferring subsequent DO interview invites). Never say never and shoot your shot, future doc 🙂

Can't imagine how good that must feel. Thanks for your reply and congratulations!!!!

Ah. Vezzini was an "executive" (back to Princess Bride reference).
