Dear fellow Pre-Dents: I really need your serious input about my academic status

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
As of right now, your 2.8 sgpa would be a huge road block to your application. You need to get at least a 3.0 (but the higher the better of course). If you apply next cycle with that GPA, the chances don't look too good and you would end up wasting money.

I would take the suggestion of the dental school and extend your graduation another year. Get all A's in upper div science courses and your chances of gaining acceptance would be significantly increased. Also, did you take the DAT already? Make sure to do well on the DAT, especially the science sections to show the Admissions Committee that you can handle the hard science courses during dental school.

Another year in the grand scheme of things is insignificant considering that if you get accepted, you would spend 30-40 years doing what you love.

Please advise me what should I do. So my first 2 years at a university has not been the best and i had to retake 3 science classes. Because of this my current GPA is:

Cumulative: 3.5
Science: 2.82

I am finishing up my fifth year at a university and was going to apply to dental schools but my science GPA is just so bad because of those 3 classes. I def have an upper trend but I was advised by one dental school to just wait and take 1 year of just full time science classes (that would be my 6th year) I calculated my science gpa if i got all A's and it would go up to 3.2 Should i just wait and extend my graduation and take the 6th year of just science courses. By the way im a business major and Im 22 years old! THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ALL THE HELP! I AM REALLY AT A CROSSROADS HERE

I think that your sci GPA might be a liability, but ppl have gotten into dental school with similar GPAs, but why make your life more difficult? Have you thought about the DAT yet? What does your time-frame for the next couple months look like otherwise?

Well im doing full time in school right now as well as studying for my RDA license exam. I work at a pediatric dental office. Maybe its just best to spend 1 more year of improving my science GPA. Im getting married in june so studying for the DAT may not be the best idea right now

Hey I went to CSUS too! Were you in the predental club '08-'09 school year?

I think you might have a shot at a few schools because your overall gpa is good but your science gpa will really hold you back... some schools might not even look at your application with a sci gpa below 3.0... if you can afford to, you should take another year of classes to boost your science gpa to at least a 3.0-3.2, you would also have more time to study for the DAT under this scenario...

You are given advice from someone that certainly counts and is more knowledgeable but you believe that the SDN forum is a better source.

I would suggest taking another year. It will also prepare you more for the science curriculum in dental school and the DAT with a year of upper division biology courses under your belt.

Not to mention that this is the op' s third thread on the same subject. I wonder if he realizes there's a clinical definition for people who keep repeating the same action hoping for a different result.

Yes I was. Do you mind telling me what schools you got accepted to and what was your gpa/dat?

Just curious

Cool. Sac State predent club got me to where I am today! I had interviews at: Tufts, UPenn, BU, Case, UPitt (in that order). I only went to Tufts, UPenn, and Case and got accepted to all 3. I chose UPenn. oGPA 3.7, sGPA 3.7, DAT (AA/TS/PAT): 20/21/20.
