If a death in your immediate family occurs during a semester and you end up doing OK but not as well as you probably would've done without that major life event, should you let adcoms know that you went though a difficult time that semester even if your grades seem mostly consistent? I feel like I should still be able to let ADCOMS know I persevered in a semester despite major personal stuggle out of my control.

This might be best saved for the secondary prompts that seem relevant to the question. Just be sure that it is not misinterpreted as an excuse for a less than steller semester when your performance was similar to the semester before the event.
