Question: how do you know when they are talking about B- decay or B+ decay???

I went through a lot of questions not knowing which one to use, I know your supposed to add a proton when its B- decay and subtract when its B+ decay but how do you know which one to use??? thanks

if it says Beta positron then you know it is +B. but if it says Beta decay then you know that you are adding one to the atomic number and subtracting from neutron.

So lets say that you have 60 Fe

and it went through a Beta decay. so right away you know that you are adding one to the atomic number but remember that the mass number stays the same. but if they asked you what is the positron Beta decay, then you just subtract one from the atomic number. hope this helps.

got it sick thanks alot, and alpha decay you just subtract 4 from the mass number and 2 from the atomic number correct? of the parent of course

Thats correct. Also, if they just say beta decay without specifying, youre supposed to assume Beta- correct??

I believe thats what my book said.

as long as it doesn't say positron, just assume that it's a normal beta decay.
