Hello everyone, yea I decided not to go to medical school, even though i love helping people, memorizing and understanding science, i dont think i can depend on my parents for financial help untill i am 30+. I am 23 and was going to apply to medical school this summer.

If i will get rejected this cycle i will have to waiyt another year and i will be 24 when applying for next cycle. I was thinkg that i woud work hard after residency to pay off my debt, but then i would have to depend on my parents more when i am 34-36.

I was thinking of changing my major to computer science or become PA. Even though ill have to study extra 3-4 years for CS major, at least ill have time to work part time and take care of ,yself, so i wont have to depend on my parents. I used to work in high school and first two years in college, so ill be able to have freedom to spend my own money. I love computer, but i am not computer nerd, like most cs majors, so i am afraid i might not stand a chance against them for job competition, but i am fast learner, i think i can do it.

If i wanna become PA, Ill have to wait another year, so i can get some extra clinical volunteering hours. Maybe ill be able to become PA when iam 27 yo. I dont care about prestige, but i always wanted to be someone important and be able to create something with my own hands.

So what do you think? Should i choose PA or CS (game designer/web designer).

this is all over the place. first off, you're making the assumption that you'll get rejected this cycle, but you don't give any reason why this is so. secondly, what do you mean by "depend on your parents"? can you not take out loans to pay for school?
Lastly, CS and PA are two totally different careers why even bother mentioning them in the same sentence without a proper backstory other than "i love computer"

This thread looks like a quarter life crisis spit up onto a thread. as a student of science id hope you can appreciate the idea of going about this a little more scientifically. Test the waters, find what you love most. If this aligns with a path to medical school, go to medical school. If this aligns with a path towards CS, go that way. But it seems to me you need to figure out what you truly love/want to do.

In 4 years you be financially independent. You will have a salary and will be making loan payments. Solid but frugal budgeting will allow you to be comfortable and pay off loans.

That is debatable. But financial reasons should never deter you from pursuing what you enjoy. Consider the 1.2Trillion student debt the US is facing. Just join the rest of us 🙂

Your major knowledge gap is the extent to which you'll need to depend on parents. In medical school, student loans are generally used to cover most expenses (including housing, not just tuition) according to my knowledge. You really won't need parental input for this. Once you're a resident, you'll make a meager salary, it'll be enough to get by. Again, parental support optional. Once you make the salary of a practicing physician, you'd have to be pretty financially unwise in order to require the help of your parents. So in short, if you can get into medical school, you can probably fend for yourself from there on out.

Now, why did you want to be a doctor? Did you have any clinical experiences? If so, did you enjoy them? Did you shadow any doctors and find that you liked the work that they did? What are your grades like? Have you taken the MCAT? These are all more important in determining whether you should apply for medical school than the fear of depending on your parents.
