I just got 2 books--MSAR and US News ultimate guide to medical schools, and I was looking through all the schools.

How did people choose which schools they applied to? There are so many schools, I feel lost. I have this list of schools, but I know they are all reaches, and I'm wondering how people chose their "lower tier" schools. Also, I know this list is just a random list of "good" medical schools, and I probably wouldnt be happy at many of them---how do you find out enough about them pre-app to weed them out? Thanks!

UCSD
UCLA
US California

I would use geography as the first screening tool, average indebtedness (if that's gonna be an issue for you) as the next, and curriculum type as the third. After that, just apply to all of them and see where you get interviews. At that point you can get a feel for the actual atmosphere of the place. 🙂

Hmm, well for geography: California! Unfortunately, it seems like they're all pretty tough.

Indebtedness: not an issue, i know, i'm a biatch. (well not an issue now, I'll deal with the issues later)

Curriculum type: how do I find out this sort of stuff? Is it the limited information in the books, or should I look at the school's websites? Thanks!

it should be in MSAR, although you can probably fish it out of websites too.

I encourage you to expand your horizons beyond california. Believe it or not, the rest of the country doesn't suck 🙂 well, any more than cali anyway 🙂

Hey, if you've got the spare scratch, I can send my latest direct loans statement to you for a charitable donation 🙂

haha. I'm taking a charitable donation/loan myself, from my parents Maybe proposition them? 😛

And yeah.. the rest of the country is ok. I went to undergrad on the east coast, and I pretty strongly prefer it here 😀

ehhhh I drove through the south. People stared at me. I got scared, and ran back to my car and drove away. :scared: This was in Miss or Ala.
